Most 19" and 21" screens from that time support 1600x1200 at 75Hz, and usually the "recommended" resolution was 1280x1024 (5:4) at 85Hz. They're very common now around here.

We were talking 17" (unless I'm seeing things again, which could happen), that's why the resolution amazed me.

The mystery box I bought arrived today 😀

Its was a heavy package and I had to carry it 1.5 km (about a mile in medieval units)
Thetreasurechest.jpg

Inside the box we find a 286 system with a HDD 😀
Insidethebox.jpg

A pretty fast 286, with the standard free pubes for a real authentic experience.

The video card seem to be really nice, an 8 bit ISA VGA card compatible with the IBM 5150 and it does also support both EGA and CGA!

Mystery box looks good, try Catacomb 3D on it
I see it comes with FPU as well right?

Neat. What software does it use to do that, I am pretty sure Windows can't do anything like that natively?

Windows, as pointed out, can rotate it to either "side." To sub-divide it I'm using DisplayFusion Pro, but I know that ATi Hydravision (which is a free optional component of Catalyst) offered a similar "grid" feature at least through XP (I don't know if it still exists in Vista/7/8).

I do not think there is a FPU installed but there is a socket for a 287.

Local used computer hardware store that's closing down is selling their "stock", display cases and other things inside. Part of that is some "card storage blocks" they had in the back and brought out recently. They're just blocks of wood with slits cut in em, but spaced perfectly to store lots of dual-slot cards, or single-slot cards, and just spaced perfectly so that they don't actually touch each other no matter which way they tilt. The "brackets" on the end touch but not the actual cards. Well I picked up 4 blocks @ $2.50 each. I finally have a proper way of storing all my cards where they won't get damaged. Happy days.

This is just a fraction of my collection, and I need proper shelves to keep this stuff on some day. For now at least they're not just laying around random on most of my desks anymore.

Neat!
Does that one support proper VGA (720x400/640x350/640x400 [not just the VESA modes], 4:3 aspect, 70Hz) on the 15-pin sub-D input? This is difficult to test, but maybe you already know...

at first I was like "WHAT?" then i realized my particular monitor ONLY has dvi input. The one i linked obviously is an update, and has the full gamut of inputs.

Thanks anyway! Yes there are obviously two versions around, and the one with the analog inputs could possibly be a nice solution for current and retro gaming usage. According to some reports it is IPS, but can apparently handle more than 60 Hz, and it has high resolution, which is always good with interpolation. However, I've found nothing on aspect ratio handling or low resolution support, and I'm not willing to risk 650€ to find out...

I got my Inspiron 8100 in today! 😎 Did notice quite a bit of damage around the USB ports, more than likely because of a combination of shipping hijinks and mediocre packaging by the seller. Also, it was very dirty and had that musty basement smell. Nonetheless, it does work perfectly, despite a tiny bit of screen damage that might be visible in the pictures.

And this is Unreal Tournament, running smoothly at native resolution (1400x1050) with maxed-out settings. UT's the only game I've tried out on this so far.

And the only one you'll ever need 😁
Joking, but try Unreal 1 with the latest patch also. I was able to make it run quite good (65+ fps) on a cheap Geforce 2 mx400 with both S3TC and detail textures (16bit).

What sorcery is this?
I didn't even knew such thing existed. Benchmark the hell out of it and show us the results 😀

That should be a easy fix. Is that also an embedded microphone that i see on the keyboard?
