Naturally. Stepping are different on these two. What exactly they have changed in the CPU's are unknown to me.
Hmmm.... Corporate secrets I guess. I can't find anything for shure.

The one I have seems to be slightly older, and considering they raised the VCore on the newer one I wonder if mine is not as stable or something like that.

I don't think you need to worry on that. Just use, as I will, a good cooler. 😀 I think these a subtle changes, that don't matter for gaming.

Hopefully most will work. I'm particularly interested in the Permedia 2V card and the S3 Trio I've spotted as well as a few others :cool

These Arrived this morning. £2.20. 4x256mb PC133 Crucial ram sticks, only when checking them out they are ECC modules. Advert didn't state that and i couldn't check the stickers. Will test them in my Asus P5A as from reading the manual that accepts ecc ram with the option to turn the checking ON/OFF.

Still £2.20 is nothing and i'm sure i will be able to use them in something in the future.

it actually says ECC right on the sticker. ALSO it has 9 chips per side and nu buffers so its obvious. that said, it's a GOOD DEAL.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Just tested the ECC sticks out on my Asus P5A with a K6-2 500. Worked fine. Timings set to 2-2-2. Was funny populating all 3 slots with 768mb haha. Tested Quake 2 and the time demo took a 6fps hit with 768mb compared to 512/256mb.

remove a stick and try again. Whats most likely happening is you are past the cache-able ram limit. Long story short, there is only so much ram your L2 cache can address. Most P5A's cap at 512mb or less. A K6 (2 or 3)+ resolves this, but is still a concern.

nice! A 104 + 105 input/output selectors. I have already taken them apart and its exactly as I suspected, gang switches in one and nothing else, and the other is gang switches and an opto with a cap or two. so minor. could combine these into one little system very easily.

Don't know if this counts, but they are retro and they both use floppy disks. Both came with chargers and (working) batteries, and one came with full documentation. I was given a Sony Mavica FD7 (used) around 2000, when I was in high school. I loved taking pictures with it, but I think the floppy disk controller was malfunctioning. It could never properly read PC 1.44MB formatted disks, but was fine when they were formatted by the camera. Unfortunately some files at random could not be read when I put the disk in the PC.

I remember using those in England back in 2000 or so! I had something similar, because I could take little 5-10 second videos with it!

Another cheap board arrived today. Had a AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1333 sitting in my draw and spotted this on ebay. Its a Epox 8kta+. It was boxed in as new condition. £11 delivered. Because the chip is a 133mhz chip and this being the KT133 only supporting 100mhz it would boot a 1ghz. There is a jumper on the board for 133mhz but will not boot when switched. Whipped out the old HB pencil and joined the 4 L1 bridges and selected 12.5x multiplier. Funnily enough it shows a 13x multi on post for 1300mhz. Put 768mb in of the cheap crucial i got yesterday. Will get 98SE installed and have a play. Not decided on what cards to use on this board yet.

Actually these are one of the better motherboards for the older chips. And they're KT-133A boards, which will run at 133 mhz just fine, they just need a bios update for it. They'll even run with up to mobile Barton AthlonXP Chips as well. I'll try and look through my stuff to find the bios update for it.. but it was a PITA to hunt down on the internet today and I don't know where mine is.

EDIT: Here you go. 😀

https://web.archive.org/web/20020406010150/ht … d/bios/8kta.htm

This at least gives you file names (unfortunately the actual downloads don't work) But then we can google hunt for file names.... and... viola: http://www.elhvb.com/mobokive/Archive/Epox/bios/index.html

Just control-F and look for: 8kta2218.exe It's there and works and I downloaded it and verified with the readme file it's for the EP-8KTA+, and the date and file size match up with the EpoX Website.
