I just received a pack of 11 miscellaneous older ATX IO shields for only $7. Not bad at all considering how much they tend to go for individually these days.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

I have a full box of them, I wish people would ask for them so I could trade them for something more useful 😵

If I end up needing any specific IO shields that I don't already have, I'll keep you in mind! 😁

I bought myself an HP LP2065 1600x1200 monitor for $54, two Hitach Deskstar 160Gb SATA II drives and a Seagate 160Gb SATA II Drive for $30.

I used to have two HP LP2065 back in 2007-2012. It has S-IPS type LCD and it's great for business usage. Didn't use it for gaming at all. Do try it out and report how it fares.

I was looking to buy it again as it has 4:3 display ratio - great for old games - I would use it for emulators (MAME...) as it has PIVOT function - best for vertical shooters 😁

I haven't tried it out with a DOS machine yet, but I can report that Quake 2 looks and plays fantastically at 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1600x1200. DOSBox also works and looks great at 1600x1200.

Finally I can move away from the Geforce 4 Ti 4200 😀
I love that GPU (4200) but now I want to see what a 4Ti really can do!!

I'm pretty certain that card is capable of 30-bit color. I'm not sure if it can output 30-bit to a CRT like my Parhelia can, but if you find the right monitor, you'll have that added bonus!

Thanks! Good to know!
I wonder how it would compare to a regular Geforce 4 Ti 4600.

@Ozzuneoj
Cool! 😀

Got a pair of Slot 2 Pentium III/900/100/2MB Xeon's for my upcoming Abit Slot 2 rig. Price was all right at about €70 euros for the two, as they're getting quite rare these days.

I'm actually looking to buy this one... been watching it for about 6 months. It's S-PVA, 21", 1600x1200, 4:3. But don't have the needed space at the moment 😠

There is a guy local to me that has been selling these exact NEC monitors for 40 USD each. I think he's got a stockpile of them he got from off corporate lease. There is a number of companies in my area that do that sort of thing.

These are beautiful! I am so tempted to get one 😁

My main problem with LCDs for gaming is motion blur... Which is much worse on older screens. It totally ruins the look of 2D games since you lose all detail when the screen scrolls.

Call me old fashioned, but I'd opt for a high end CRT over any other screen for any kind of gaming. I know they're huge but... so are our retro computers in comparison to laptops that could mostly emulate them.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

I don't think that's a real issue for a modern screen - but then, I haven't used a good CRT for anything other than a PS2 in nearly ten years (as the one I had on my retro PC about five years ago was well past its best). I've been gaming on old TFT laptops and have rarely had any issue, and that includes 2D games like Jazz Jackrabbit. The issue with older TFTs is the lack of screen scaling or the pretty poor efforts at it rather than motion blur IMO.

Motion blur for 2D was just a problem with the early actual "LCD" screens. Today's modern low-latency LED screens basically completely resolved and eliminated that issue.

Sorry for nitpicking here, but I'm pretty sure LED only refers to the back-lighting technology (as opposed to the older cathode lighting), and as far as I know has nothing to do with latency.

Most modern computer displays are still Liquid Crystal Displays, with the exception of plasma displays, OLED, etc.

new panels have like 1ms refresh rates, old panels had very high refresh rates. TN faster than IPS.. IPS has better colour gamut.

motion blur was that old panels had a slow grey-to-grey gradiation response time (pixel turning off). tn panels have a much fater g-t-g response time.

Some stats I found show you a huge difference in response times on some panels;

 Model FlexScan EV2333W FlexScan SX2462W FlexScan EV2303W
Panel Type VA IPS TN
Panel Size 23" 24.1" 23"
Native Resolution 1920 × 1080 1920 × 1200 1920 × 1080
Maximum Brightness 300 cd/m2 270 cd/m2 250 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio 3000:1 850:1 1000:1
Response Time
(black-white-black) 25 ms 13 ms 5 ms
Response Time
(gray-to-gray) 7 ms 5 ms No
Overdrive Circuit Yes Yes No

My fastest LCD has 2 ms, but the scrolling is still better on my beaten up LCD. Still, I use it exclusively for the Mist Amiga, here the smooth scrolling matters most to me. Everything else is LCD.
