I found a Macintosh SE FDHD on Craigslist recently, and was able to haggle the seller down to $50 for everything. It even came with the original peripherals! Upon plugging it in, I found out it worked flawlessly. It booted into an install of Macintosh System 7.0.2, which worked, but was...very slow.... I could actually see it "drawing" the program windows whenever I moved them anywhere on the screen. The hard drive had been upgraded to a 345 MB Maxtor and it appears to have also been upgraded to 2.5 MB of RAM, with a mod allowing the use of jumpers to select the amount of RAM installed (or at least that is what I believe it to be.

It still had some dust inside and was a bit dirty from age, so I decided to tear it down and give it a deep clean. The system itself wasn't bad at all, just a few spider webs here and there and the usual dust around the fan. However, when I took the keyboard apart...it was horrible. Clumps of dust and hair which when removed exposed rust spots. 😵 I really do not want to think what caused those...anyway, after a lot of work, I was able to get it cleaned up as well. I lubricated and cleaned the floppy drive, wiped the hard drive and downgraded it to System 6.0.8, which absolutely flies (it boots up in less than ten seconds now!) and I am currently having fun loading it up with games. I really like how this system has turned out, and I hope in the future I can upgrade it with more RAM and maybe a PDS upgrade card (although those are going to be difficult to find).

has anyone posted photos of those old CD_rom kits that were sold during the 486 era?
the kits came with a Sony 1X CD-rom drive and a mediavision soundcard, plus skeakers and some free games.

Never heard of that before, but, I remember seeing a Sound Blaster kit being sold on eBay at one point in time that came with a 2x CD-ROM drive, games, the sound card itself, and speakers. I did, however, purchase a CD-ROM drive & Sound Card combo on eBay (the CD-ROM drive needed repairs, and it's fully functional). If I come across one, I'll let you know.

I don't recall one made by Sony but I do have a Reveal Voyager model MFX18 which consists of Sound Card, 2x CD ROM, Speakers (passive), a small software bundle consisting of a encyclopaedia and Megarace plus a load of utilities for Win3.x and DOS.

Plays nice with Linux as well (back in the day it did anyway) but you needed to boot from floppy for that and continue the install from CD when you've pointed out to the installer what type of CD drive you have.

My first 486dx-33 computer came with a Sony 2x cd-rom and Sony IDE controller.

Not retro hardware, but retro hardware related. Saw this on the "free" table at a thrift store. Third edition circa 1990 which has first edition (1971) and second edition (1985) info mixed in. Nice that this book somehow is in almost mint condition. Should be fun (for a geek like me) to flip through.

Pick this up locally from friend looking to clear some stuff - told that it might have been used to connect an external SCSI drive enclosure. NCR chip, but It enumerates at POST from a company called Rodime.

Got this 486 lot for less than $30, I think I got a great deal.

Seller said he has more 486 and Pentium era stuff for sale for cheap (hard times, so he's unloading a personal collection) and will be sending me a list soon.

Nice, That's all you need to setup a Novell 3.12 server or Client workstation.

A couple of recent pickups, a Dell OEM Geforce 3 Ti 500 and a Creative TNT2 Ultra CT6810. The fan on the TNT2 was noisy, but a bit of cleaning and lithium grease in the bearing seems to have brought it back to life. 😁

Has a 486-25mhz complex installed.

Looking for a P90 or P60 complex if anyone has one just laying around =P also looking for a Ps/2 floppy drive either 1.44mb or 2.88

Unfortunately, yeah. Its case was damaged in shipping. I should have figured considering the distance it came and its size (from Louisiana to Michigan)

I kept all of the shards in case I can somehow glue them all back together to make one big shard... but it doesnt seem promising. The plastic is very brittle, and non-porous, superglue I tried didnt work very well...

If anyone has a non-working Model 90 XP or just the case, ill take that off your hands too. Unlikely but I might as well ask =P

These PS/2 are a pain to work with. All Proprietary IBM parts.
If you want the IBM 486 Cadillac then get the PS/1
Really easy to work with , All ISA slots, and no proprietary parts.
They run very good and fairly quiet.
IBM PS/1 Consultant 1993 with Sound blaster.
