Ah it was you who bought that! Was watching it, plus your V3 3500 auctions but had no spare cash available. Great items as always though, as badmojo says, the MT32 is sweet!!

How good a card is this version?

Finally got to test it last night It works!

Im not huge on FPS games, more into racing games.

Have a copy of Grand prix legends, is this good for that?

what system is a best for it, whats the range?

It's a 1000G. With only 8 megs of RAM, it will probably run nothing that requires a Voodoo3. All official Voodoo3 cards had 16 megs of video RAM. It has no second TMU either (well, it has, but it's not active by default). This one was for office PCs and was called "Velocity 100" instead of Voodoo3.

It is a cut down Voodoo 3 but with driver hacks the second TMU can be enabled and it will run GPL perfectly at 800x600.

I remember back in its day Velocity 100 was an incredible deal. 8MB was just what everybody needed and with simple registry hack it could be unlocked to become a full Voodoo card at attractive cost. A kind of Celeron 300 in GPU land.

The 2000 and 3000 series were better, right? I have a V3 2000 PCI and V3 3000 PCI in my collection. The V3 2000 PCI hasn't been tested yet, but before I test it out, I'll be adding a fan to the heatsink since those cards overheated and caused graphical issues. Lost a V3 2000 PCI to that and my old GeForce 6200 AGP 512MB did that as well, except the issue would go away for a while and come back.

I know it's a cut down version, but for me it's still 3dfx, even if its not the best of the bunch. its still a big step up from a tnt2m64, right?

Bjwil,
yours are the higher series, but PCI. Mine is an AGP. Does that make a performance difference? will the registry update make a lot of difference?

semi related - what's the sweet spot for a cpu to pair with this? I believe it came out of a gateway slot1 machine. Is this more suited to a p4?

1 GHz P3 I'd say. Everything faster will not give you much more speed, since that Voodoo3 simply has nothing more to offer. P4 works as well, if you stick with an early Willamette. 😉

No, but you get glide which can be regarded as such 😀 3dfx cards should be used from a retro perspective as glide-enablers in my opinion and not compared in quake benchmarks, although the V3 was an excellent all-arounder.

You can try flashing the bios to a voodoo 3 3000. It isn't hard to do, and there are tons of files online.

The only tricky thing is that some bios files are meant for different/faster memory. The resource I found a while back had them labeled. The slower memory bios are probably a safe bet.

I used a VooDoo2 on my Socket 754 build running Windows 98SE and it worked perfectly fine once I underclocked the GPUs to 75MHz from 83Mhz (chips got hot and might've been the root cause all this time for the VooDoo2 card issue). The second one I bought on eBay works without issues and no missing anything.

I have never owned anything older than a 486dx4 100 so I am unsure what to do with it.

That's a neat little desktop pc with the 3 digit clock speed display. 386 is excellent for playing Test Drive II. It would be interesting to find out what the maximum clock speed is that the 3 digit display can handle.

I was waiting for the InWin IW-A500 to show up on eBay, and it did, but I hemmed and hawed about buying it and someone here got it. 😉

Another NIB one was posted so I snatched it up.

who doesn't want an In-Win A500 ^^
I have two, but unfortunately they're a bit "aged" but I'm lucky to have them nonetheless, I'd also jump at the opportunity to get one nib ^^

...with these :3c

the battery seems to just have started to leak, there's a lot of buildup on the battery but no corrosion on the board yet it seems, getting the snip immediately.
conveniently it came in an Asus TX97 box with tape over the model because this was inside... well I'm going to remove that carefully, because just last week I got a TX97, now I have a box too ^^

Where are you going to use it for?

Windows NT 4.0 Dual Pentium Pro Intergraph OpenGL machine build. 😀

That's going to be an unique system 😀

I have never installed NT 4.0 on one of my retro game pc's because of the lack of USB support, but you can of course use a NIC, optical drive or CF card for exchanging large files.
