This is going straight into my Pentium 3@500 Slot 1 build where a Voodoo 3 3000 used to live. Guess I'll have to upgrade the CPU now, too.

How much does it cost? The price of Voodoo5 5500 tends to be highly inflated on ebay these days. Or did you buy it somewhere else?

Just collected this and had to drag it home in the snow - It's an early Dell XPS system which I like the case design of - it might be nice get a CRT to stick on top of it since my other cases are mini towers.

The computer itself is not so interesting, I think the condition is pretty good for its age and it's a regular mid 97 440LX chipset Pentium II 233 system.
The interesting (for me) part is the integrated OPL4 audio, hopefully it still works.

That's a neat little machine you've got there, I'm a big fan of those older Dell computers.

174 USD. I bought it via the local site. I think it’s still possible to find it 50 USD cheaper, but I liked the fact that I didn’t have to pay for shipping and the seller actually brought the card to my home for testing — that was pretty convenient.

You can get one on ebay for that price too, of course if you're lucky and fast enough.

The fastest Socket 370 CPU I now own. It was shipped wrapped in an A4 paper, then taped up in a plastic bag. No wonder it came to me with two dozen bent pins, and I had to spend a good amount of time getting things straightened to the point it can fit in a CPU Socket. It's certainly not ZIF anymore, but fits. 😎

I was under the impression that all Tualatin PIII's were 512K Cache -S models, but apparently I was wrong, this one is a 256K cache regular PIII.

Nope the Celerons are marked accordingly and run on 100MHz FSB this is marked a Pentium III and runs on a 133MHz FSB.

Yep, there were a few 256kB cache P3 Tualatins made. Not hugely popular, though, as if you were after bang-for-your buck you'd go for an Athlon anyway, and if you were splurging, you might as well buy the 512kB L2 SMP-capable Tualatin anyway.

Funny how Voodoo seems to be the rare example of retro hardware where newer models cost more than older ones. It can be explained by the fact that Voodoo 4 and 5 were less successful and popular than Voodoo 1-3, but still. The only other case that comes to mind are faster slot 1 Pentium 3 CPUs (anything faster than 733-800 MHz) but that again can be explained by rarity.

Yeah, which is absolutely crazy. I snagged one last year for less than $100.. and that was to server as a backup for the V5-5500 I purchased brand new from CompUSA back in the day.

Woohoo! I seem to have hit gold. Responded to a seller offering a box of badly photographed cards (mainly VGA). Just going by what I could identify it was worth it - I could see two 3Com Etherlink II 8b ISA cards and some decent 16b ISA sound cards for starters.

Just got home with the haul, and it's better than I could have hoped. First of some practical low-profile things I actually needed (Intel Gb PCI NIC), then ID'd the cards. As well as a lot of run-of-the-mill Gf2MXs there are some nice TNT1 cards, a Matrox P750, a PCIe Parhelia, some nice RagePro & 128 AGP cards, some nice S3 PCI cards (2MB 868, 4MB Virge), a Diamond Fire GL in pretty mint condition. Then enough Ethernet cards to run a LAN party. And as an unnanounced freebie a pile of BNC 10Base2 Ethernet cabling + terminators. Oh, and two matched P3-1000EB CPUs. No time for pics now, but will post them later as I get down to testing this lot.

$100 isn't bad for a VooDoo5 5500, which I understand. I paid $50 + S&H for a VooDoo3 3000 PCI last year and I added a fan on the heatsink to prevent the card from overheating (which does work very well) from Amibay that came with everything (driver CD, manual, box, etc). The only card I had that was acting up on me was a VisionTek TNT2 M64 clone card that had shadows everywhere when there was text, but the graphics weren't affected, and neither was MS-DOS prompt. I paid $10 for a used Pentium 4 machine that had a TNT2 card installed (took it out and installed it in my Socket 370 build), which works very well. I've seen VooDoo 1 cards going for a lot more on eBay nowadays.

That is indeed a fantastic price. But you can still make bargains if you are patient and if you react quickly on notifications. I sold my second V5 5500 AGP in box last year for around 150 USD (didn't need the money, I got it for the same price) and if memory serves me right there was a V5 on eBay Germany for around 40 USD last year. No need to mention, it was sold within minutes...
This just shows, even though regular prices are on the rise every once in a while there is still a good deal out there. Also, now that most 3dfx hardware is arranged in enthusiasts collections there will definitely be a time, when the grown-ups from today want to get rid of their stuff as they care more about family and life instead of retro PC nostalgia. Give it some more years and the supply will go up again. No collection is forever.
