Bought this today at a local thrift store a Diamond Viper v550 4mb, maybe not so special but for 3 euro i couldn't resist not to buy. It came in a Mtek box probably the previous owner put this card in the box after a upgrade.

Maybe i going to use it for my pentium 2 233mmx build.

I love those eyewateringly ugly boxes from that era - so much colour!

Same here, they REALLY needed to convince you the included vga had a bazillion of colors 🤣 🤣 🤣

Based on the larger notch that those modules are supposed to have, I found a 4 MB module. May have others, but have to check.

That would be very nice of you, I am trying to get more information.
All I could come up with so far is

- the original part numbers for 79F1003 (4MB) and 79F1004 (8MB)
- 80ns apparently
- FPM with parity
- bigger ("square"-)notches

Presence detect pins (pin67-70) for the original parts:

— — Gnd Gnd // 4MB 85ns 79F1003 (square notch) L40-SX
Gnd — Gnd Gnd // 8MB 80ns 79F1004 (square notch) L40-SX
Gnd Gnd Gnd Gnd // 2MB 85ns 79F1003 (square notch) L40SX

Jetway 993AN is a Slot-1/Socket370 combo board, no? How will you use an MMX CPU on that? The card is AGP, the MMX is Socket 7, you would need a Super Socket 7 board for that, and honestly, using SS7 AGP for just a Viper 550 is just too much trouble for no good reason, that card probably belongs on an early Celeron system..

So I picked up the little baby brother version of the Sony VAIO PCG-XG29 I posted about the other day.. which I am currently fixing up - had a crack in the back ventilation/support assembly and messed up clip.
Also swapped out the 18GB 4200RPM drive for a 32GB SSD by using an IDE to SATA adapter and trimming the SSD case so it would fit.

Anyway, BEHOLD! the tiny Sony VAIO PCG-141A.
Hope it works as it was untested due to the seller just picking it up to sell it and didn't have the power adapter to test.
Screen is 8.9" with a resolution of 1024x480
Weight is about 2.2 lbs (will be lighter once I swap out the stock drive with an SSD).
Video - ATI Rage Mobility 8MB
Sound - Yamaha DS-XG - I think it is the YMF744B-F, which is the same as the PCG-XG29 (YES, YES, YES.. awesome DOS support)
CPU - Crusoe TM5600 600 MHz

Now look at this side... that "long" slot is the PCMCIA slot.. for size comparison to show how tiny this thing actually is.

Is this the ultimate small laptop for DOS/Win98?

Would be interesting to se how the Crusoe performs under DOS (and Windows).

Slowly.
It's one of those CPU's that have amazing power management but the clock speed does NOT compare to similar chips at the same speed. Windows 98se fully patched seems a bit sluggish but windows 2000 crawls.
Worth noting however that if you got a good install on it: Keep it. The drivers for the cool features like the scrollwheel, camera and wide LCD support are bundled with Sony's drivers. The downloads on their site last I checked were mainly updates that checked for existing drivers and software and if you don't have that, well then you're screwed as unless I've missed something Vaio recovery media this old is unobtanium.

MWAHAHAHAHA. The support ftp has everything from what I can tell. The files are just sorta named horribly.

Took me a few hours to sort out which sound driver package worked properly for the PCG-XG29, but I finally have sound fully working in Windows and DOS. And to top it off, the YMF744 chip is wired for PC-PCI so it should absolutely work with everything in DOS. 😀 😀 😀 😀

The WDM drivers for Windows suck. No hardware buffers or 3d sound for directsound. The VXDs work fine though.

Wow, that sounds like an awesome DOS laptop. Hopefully the Rage card doesn't give you any trouble. I have a feeling ATI's poor DOS support is blown out of proportion a bit by the famous DOS vga compatibility chart that shows lots of red boxes and not many green ones for all ATI cards, but I haven't had much experience with them myself.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

The XG29 is definitely awesome for DOS - at least for sound. I haven't had a chance to actually run anything on it yet - just working on getting Windows set up before I start actually playing with it.

The 141A seems like it will be awesome as well. Not too worried about the video in DOS, but I guess I'll find out when I get it.. and if it works.

What are the chances that a couple of the few laptops that have sweet, sweet DOS sound support pop up for sale for cheap at the same time.. especially when I just happen to decide to look for a good DOS laptop with real mode sound support built in?
