Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Looks like Expresscard to me the successor to PCMCIA.

There is no 1,25GHz XP desktop version from AMD available. There are 1,2GHz embedded versions, but they have 12x multi.
It seems that you have maybe an Athlon XP 2600+ or 2800+ (cause your post screen show 1250MHz = 12,5 x 100 FSB).

I think that is about the most common mistake ever made when it comes to computers. Lots and lots of Amd Athlon systems are advertised with the wrong speed because no one seems to notice that the bios always goes to the default 100mhz fsb when the battery is dead.

The 2000+ was very common and that one also has a 12,5 multi (133fsb), so my wild guess is the 2000+. 🤣

Received today, and been playing with for the last hour, my first 486 laptop. That's right, I have many old laptops but they all were pentium and above. This one is a Thinkpad 755CE, 486DX4/100, 24MB RAM. Has Windows 95 (OSR1) installed. At first it wouldn't boot all the way, it began starting W95 then power off. It was however booting all the way in safe mode. I removed the battery and now it boots all the way in normal mode. The HDD has almost nothing apart from the W95 OS and Word97. However, in a folder marked "arcade" I found a very old version of MAME for DOS, from December 1998. No game ROMs installed unfortunately. The screen is supposed to be TFT 800x600x16bpp, but for some reason the max I can set it to is 640x480x16bpp. It does show the higher resolution as available, and display properties does say that the panel is 800x600 but for some reason it doesn't want to switch in the higher resolution.

Well I'm tired now, going to bed. Something to play with more, tomorrow.

I/O, I/O,
It's off to disk I go,
With a bit and a byte
And a read and a write,
I/O, I/O

This might be a driver issue, or the LCD doesn't support 800x600 resolution. Do you have the 10.4" display? I had a similar problem with my Thinkpad 360Cs (10.4" DSTN). The onboard video (Western Digital WD90C24A - 1MB) supports 256 colors at 640x480 resolution, but 8-bit color mode will not work unless the obscure DOS driver is loaded first. I could select a higher resolution of 800x600 as well, but the display doesn't really support it.

[EDIT]

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:755CE

Turns out that the 755CE only supports 640x480 resolution.

True dat. I remember looking at the wiki before buying it and I'm OK with that resolution. The driver must be on the fritz thinking it can do higher.

I also received a VLB WD90c33 video card. Didn't get around to test it. It's 1MB, upgradable presumably to 2MB by 40-pin ZIP memory (which I've never seen anywhere for sale).

s-l800.jpg

(edit) I wonder if this is memory that I could use to upgrade the card.

Slowly going through today's mail... USPS delivery notice, there is a package waiting for me at the office, coming from Lithuania. Had almost forgot about this one, it took several weeks to get here. It contains a Pentium Pro motherboard and some RAM. This will be my first PPro system. I have to choose a CPU to use with it - I do have several PPro CPUs.

I'm thinking... PPro-200, TNT2 PCI (or V3-2000 PCI), CT1740 or CT2230+Dreamblaster S1+CT1920, W98or NT4 or even more likely dual boot. Eventually I want to make it a SCSI RAID setup, using either an AHA2940UW or 29160 depending on what drives I find (I have the controllers and cables, need drives and terminators).

I found this in a recycling dumpster along with other junk.
I almost gave up until I saw this thing! The guy who owned the recycler got mad at me 🤣 so I took a quick look at whatever else I could find, unfortunately this was it.
486/early pentium build incoming.... (prolly WinNT)
For some reason all the cables inside were cut and I had to throw out the PSU and other things 😒 have to buy new LED's and connections now.
Oh, the board is an FIC PT-2200 and it's got a Pentium 133 and 32MB ram. The HD's a maxtor, probs 1.5GB and it's not really.. working right.

That case is AWE-SOME! 😁

AT cases of full-height height are probably almost extinct by now. And for some reason I always thought the extra height in an AT case didn't amount to very much advantage.
BUT you can probably derail a train using it, it must weight a ton! 😁

The case is AT I suppose? (the board is AT, but this doesn't rule out the case is ATX with adapter so might as well just ask, just to be sure 😀)

Sounds about right for an early Maxtor 🤣

lmfao!

I never really liked those Maxtors. Even at work, whenever we were donated some old rigs for us to rebuild (it was charity work), we'd be disappointed whenever we found a Maxtor.

They were often kinda noisy and not an insignificant portion of them had already failed.

Do you have a heatsink for your s8 board? They do run kinda hot (around 50W or so?) and regular HSFs usually will not fit.

I don't, but I have all kinds of other heatsinks. Worst case I can improvise something with a HSF and zip ties - done it before.

I think there was someone on Vogons who modified some existing heatsink to fit Socket 8.

I did notice s754/s939 heatsinks had the right size and should definitely be beefy enough to cool such a chip (one would have to turn the heatsink by 90 degrees, iirc).

Nice find, hope you enjoy your motherboard 😀

My dad has the same model of headphones, presumably from all the way back in the day.

I've had many first-time musical experiences through those. Whenever I'd annoy anyone in the family by playing through speakers, I'd scoot a chair up close to my dad's stereo and continue with the headphones. Although I gotta say, I don't think they are very comfortable. Also, when I finally got my own Sennheiser HD270, I had my first - and so far only - true hifi experience; I could litterally hear things in my records that I had never heard before. It was amazing.

But yeah, back to praising old stuff! 😀

Noice, my VLB VGA of choice is based on that chipset. Great in all respects - compatibility, image quality, speed, Win3.1 drives.

Was given a couple NOS WYSE keyboards by a friend. New in box never used, although the boxes themselves are fairly beat up from being repeatedly moved in storage since the 80s.

The lighter colored keyboard is identical to the one that came with the WYSE 286 I got early last year. The darker one though has a completely different layout, so it's apparently for a non-PC-compatible WYSE system that I'm personally not familiar with. It has the same telephone jack style connector as the 286 keyboard though, so I wonder if it will work on that system. Hesitant to try though out of fear of damaging either the keyboard or the computer.

My brother also gave me a 1GHz eMac with OS X 10.4 on it. Works mostly ok, but has a couple weird problems with the screen that are beyond my ability to repair if it can even be repaired (faint diagonal lines going across the screen every inch or so, and the screen just goes to a flickering gray box when it tries to go to sleep).
