I get that the cartridge look may be nice, but that's just aesthetic that gives off little tactical advantage.

I doubt many people here use retro hardware for practical purposes. Dosbox is practical. Retro hardware rarely is. Slot CPUs are a distinct product of their short life-time and thats what makes them attractive.

Exactly this. They're desirable because of nostalgia and because they are different than anything that came before or after. Slot CPUs solved an engineering/cost problem (L2 cache integration) that was unique to their era. That makes them cool and interesting.

Also, a ton of great games came out in the Windows 98 era and Slot 1 machines play those games well.

To me it's socket 7 that is that way, they "just" play DOS games faster than 486s, but lag for Windows 9x games that Slot 1 CPUs manage to run pretty well in comparison.

But I perfectly understand that people can prefer socket 5/7 over Slot 1, or 486 over socket 5/7 ...

DOSBox is practical for early and especially mid DOS games, but not for late ones and not for Windows 9x. Basically, nothing's more practical than a well built Windows 9x machine to play windows 9x games right now. Virtualization ain't that good, emulation is still not good enough, and keeping patching games so they run in newer oses is time consuming as well, and patches don't always exist ... And modern windows doesn't always like old games very much (I remember some game making administrator mode to not work anymore after reboot). And also DOSBox don't emulate everything yet and some stuff still do not work under it even though the DOS PC emulation is much more advanced than the win9x PC emulation right now.

I'm nearly 20 years old, I've never seen a slot 1 until I was ~15 years old so right now I can't be nostalgic of that era (or anything before that either and yet I have 8088, 286, 386 and so on ...) but I still prefer them over DOSBox for games

bought a box full of PC133 memory, seller was giving the box Lot for $7 dollars
this thing was like 10kilos of memory, hurts my back

it is ALL 128mb pc133 sticks, from good brand hynix, toshiba, infineon and micron
second photo just shows the single sided memory sticks
third photo shows the dual sided memory sticks
(i took those apart because dual sided are more compatible?)

some sticks got the traces on the back, i was thinking about experimenting taking out chips and making a 256memory, but seems very difficult to do, besides its not only the memory there must be some kind of smd capacitors too and other things.

then i said..ah, retro, win98, 128x3...384mb is more than enough for windows98
so im fine, because for winxp i would use another pc

Let me know if you need a good home for 4 of each (single and double sided). I could put them to good use 😀

The PCB's have indeed a very strong and distinct purple colorization...

I like their visual appearance too. Whenever you're in the mood please consider showing us your collection. I've noticed you have some sweet stuff too... 😀

Great looking cards, I like the 4400 in particular: that blowfish heatsink always makes me smile!

Today I had to buy some new hardware because a piece of retro-chic I'd had for the past decade died on me - my trusty old 3Com 3CGSU08 Gb switch died on me. Even though the Zyxel GS1200 that replaced it is superior in every way - managed, 60W 802.3at PoE and even so lower standby power usage - it still doesn't feel the same 😉

Oh, and I received this in the post too:

No, I'm not taking up smoking illegally imported cigarettes from the Balkans. This is on-topic, but the Bulgarian eBay seller was being creative with his packaging. Inside was this:

First time I've seen So3 CPUs smuggled like contraband. In retrospect it's a good thing it was in that sealed plastic bag as everything else stank of cheap tobacco...

Here the CPU is in full glory:

UMC U5S-SUPER33 - basically a 486SX clone. And the next piece in my 100% UMC system - I already had motherboard and NIC, now all I'm desperately searching for is the SVGA-multi I/O combination VLB card. I found one on eBay, but it's priced higher than I'm willing to pay right now, so I'll just have to be patient - or cough up the money.

That's awesome. Well at least it wasn't a spent condom box.

😜

Could have done with more protection though - the CPU pins were all over the place, took me a good 10 mins bending them back to a state where they fit into a socket.

A Toshiba Tecra 720CDT laptop, docking station, and external floppy drive (needs some work done to it), hopefully this works great for DOS/early Windows gaming/programs so I'll no longer have to put up with my Satellite's DSTN screen (this beauty has a 13" TFT @ 1024x768).

The processor in my Athlon rig is severely bottlenecking the system, so goodbye Thunderbird, hello Thoroughbred!

I think this is the fastest processor my motherboard (Abit KT7A) can use without a socket mod.
