Subtract the usual eBay madness portion of these prices and make your own mind about it. I've seen one being sold in the UK recently for way less. But I can't find the auction so no confirmation right now. I would let her go for around 300 USD but that's just me.

I'll probably list it on ebay US for 1,250 USD at that point.. and if someone buys it at that price, so be it, I can live with parting with it. I'm ok with even covering shipping it overseas at that point. The thought of all the retro stuff that I could get that I actually want with that money is enough to let it go.

My sentiment exactly. I understand there are some weird peaks in this hobby, but why would anyone want GF5800Ultra that badly? Could anyone explain?

I can understand paying a premium for certain unique parts, I play with IBM's. But you can just use a different agp card, so I just dont get it.

That said, if I ever come across one of these golden eggs, rest assured you will see it on Ebay.

Since we're all talking about 5800 series cards, I came across an ASUS V9900 FX 5800 non-ultra recently. It works perfectly! First 58xx series card I've ever gotten my hands on (I have a couple 5950 Ultras). I don't really forsee myself "needing" it, but they're so uncommon that I don't know what its worth. I think a lot of the appeal of the Ultra is the obnoxious dustbuster. This one has a "junior dustbuster" in that it still makes a ton of racket when it cranks up but I don't think its as bad as the Ultra, because it doesn't exhaust out the rear.

As for hardware we've bought recently, I was really amazed to stumble across an IBM PC XT (5160) for cheap online... and I was even more astounded when the seller offered to throw in the keyboard it came with (hopefully an original IBM Model F, though I haven't seen it myself)... and even more astounded still when he said he also had a Sysdyne CD-1343 monitor for it and that he was confident that he could pack it safely and ship it. All in all, I got them for less than $75 total, including shipping... which coincidentally, is what I paid for my 5150+5153 a couple years ago. Anyway, I hope everything survives the journey. I can't find anything about this monitor online though, just some random pictures and a thread over at vcfed about repairing a slightly different model. As far as I can tell it has support for multiple video modes (it says RGB\Green\Amber) on it and has a toggle button, which is pretty nifty, but without a manual there's no way of knowing what modes it really supports. If anyone can find anything about it, let me know!

picked up the cleanest, mintest, boxed PC 5150 i've ever come across.

looked like it had never been opened (well, maybe once to install the AST sixpack). no rust, no dust, no scratches, no corrosion. I mean not a spec of dust inside. came wrapped in plastic inside the original box.

AAAAAAND... it's dead. need to follow the minuszerodegrees troubleshooting FAQ, but i'm pretty sure the motherboard is dead. Powered it up, fan on PSU gives a quarter turn, nada. unplugged the motherboard, switched it on, fan starts spinning, and then smoke from one of the floppy drives. Fun.

Sounds like the power supply to me.

Got one older 386sx machine... as it was in pretty bad shape I took it apart. When testing the HDD there was a crackling sound and small fire was seen. But to the amaze the drive is 100% functional with no bad sectors and is recognized fine. I used it for more then an hour.

This happens from time to time when testing unknown stuff.. maybe next time I should video every test as you don't see this every day (thankfully) 😉

Tantalum caps fail short. My XT didn't even start before I replaced the ones on its HDD

🤣, did you even look at the picture to see what I mean? I own a 5150 myself and know what floppy drives are. The cable however goes to the floppy controller card and then from there further to the left to that AST card. That doesn't look correct to me. I'm not sure if it is just an optical illusion due to the perspective of the picture, though.

Definitely optical illusion. Pin 1 is red on one cable, blue on the other.

Talking about retro, I picked up a MK1red3

(not my picture but mine is identical)

It's essentially a Soviet clone on DEC's PDP11-on-a-chip F-11 chip, with extra FPU microcode.
