Based on a cheaper respin of the original aureal vortex 1 chip, the AU8820 is still pretty good. This example offers very nice line output quality and good DOS compatibility.

Considering I paid $24 AU delivered for it, I think I have done OK.

It is going into an Athlon XP-2000 based system with nvidia geforce 4ti-4200 😀

AU8820 IS the original Aureal Vortex. 8810 is the cheaper respin.

Yeah. I might be on crack thinking that back in the day, Yamaha started building their own sound cards. My memory sure ain't what it used to be!

I Googled the FCC ID and tada! Labway. 😀 Good eye! A Google hit to VOGONS mentioned someone having trouble getting stereo sound out of its Sound Blaster Pro emulation, but I'll dig deeper when I have a chance. If it does good Sound Blaster Pro emulation, combined with it having OPL3 and an MPU-401 port, I could be in heaven. 😀 And it was a dirt-cheap card too. I was chatting with stamasd from the forums here and he's who got me interested in these cards again so it was sort of an impulse purchase. But for $20? Yeah, I'm cool with that. 😀 I was a bit nervous because the seller was Russian and I wasn't sure if I'd get the package mauled by Russian bears or anything, or if I'd receive anything at all. No box, but the guy must have shares in a bubblewrap company because there must have been 3" of padding all the way around it. I suspect it'd even survive that Russian bear.

Yamaha did make their own cards - the Yamaha Audician 32 is one example. The chipsets just also ended up lots of other places.

Nice finds. The AWE64s are CT4520s not 4620s (Not sure if 4620s exist..). The SB32 is basically an AWE64 with 30 pin SIMM slots and an IDE interface. That means no bug on the MPU-401 but no daughterboard either. The YMF card is a Labway indeed.

Exactly as I suspected, there's such as thing as a CT4620, but it's a Sound Blaster Live, not an AWE64. The image on Thallanor's post shows that the cards he has are CT4520s (I could see their model numbers clearly).

Also, if you find yourself wanting to get rid of the IDE interface capability of the CT3670, you can flash AWE64 firmware on it to remove the IDE function, which makes sense if you're dealing with a newer (Pentium era) machine that already has two IDE ports: How I turned my CT3670 into an AWE64 and got rid of its pesky IDE interface

About to order this motherboard, found it listed locally at a misprice..

I also have an EPI-M 10000G but that one has an audio codec with no SB Pro Legacy compatibility; this unidentified board looks like an older mITX that would have DOS audio.. Anyone know what the board is? Searching for VT133 got me to several mATX boards of the exact same layout by PCChips/ECS (PCCHIPS M787CLR (ELITEGROUP P6VEM2 - VIA 1 Giga Pro) VIA C3 Samuel 2) but I can't seem to find the model number for the mITX version.

Appears to be a SiS 630 chipset and VIA VT1612A AC97 codec? That VIA sound codec is SB Pro Legacy compatible, so this should be pretty good for an mITX Win9x/DOS build?

My next repair project

Socket A motherboard - Gigabyte GA-7ZXE motherboard. A nice Athlon/Athlon XP motherboard with built in SB emulation via the VIA chipset.

Current Status: Boots, but isn't particularly stable. Has 7 bad capacitors.

To be replaced
5 x Choyo capacitors, XG series, 3300uF 6.3V. Can't find specs. I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and replace these with Panasonic OS-CON polymer capacitors, 1500uF 6.3V, based on the fact that this series is probably the Ultra low ESR series motherboard capacitors.
8 x Choyo capacitors, XR series, 330uf 25V. For these smaller capacitors, I'll go with Panasonic FM 330uF 25V electrolytic capacitors.
1 x Choyo capacitor, XR series, 1200uF 6.3V. I think Panasonic FM 1200uF 6.3V will be perfectly fine for this too.

SiS 630 and Via codec? This is a pure Via board with Via southbrige visible and C-Media CM8378 onboard PCI sound. The Northbridge print reeks of PC-Chips. CM-8378 has DOS drivers (via TSR), so should be OK for your purposes.

Wow. Some nice hardware there. Great case and a VLB SCSI card. Very cool and it all looks very clean.
