I found a Kingston Turbochip in a scrap lot - less than £10 for this thing and it works perfectly 😀 So loud though, so I can see why it was considered scrap. The performance difference it makes for this ISA-only with broken L2 cache is immense, Doom goes from pretty slow to downright playable.
Here's how I found it:
It replaced a 486 SX33 on this board, which is the 'proper' chip for this ISA only 486 with broken L2 cache (and broken speaker apparently):
This all runs off of a PicoPSU with an AT-ATX adapter and a constant current power supply so I can see power usage and see if a short occurs. The power bump from the 486SX33 to the 5x86 133 is quite significant - it went from 11 watts average power to 18-20 watts:
The speed check is close to where a 5x86 133 would be without any L2 cache:
