I do really like that case though

I bought my first two retro parts today for my first build.

A socket 7 motherboard (Tyan ATX Trinity 1592s) and an ALS100 sound card.

Great choices. That motherboard can probably do up to K6-III+, and that sound card has an undocumented OPL3 clone on it. It also seems to be one of the rare and higher quality ALS100 cards out there. Enjoy!

I think of everything older than 64-bit as vintage, so socket 478 Northwood is vintage in my eyes 😀

After the fool on ebay who had sent me a rare Dell 386 pc with the hard disk loose in the enclosure previous month (which had destroyed the VROM on the motherboard and damaged a sound card, a total write off), luckily today something which really makes me smile 😀

All new old stock. These are not for sale, but stay in the private collection (hint: new Celerons on the background are, but not on this forum).

(Pro tip: the P4 Titan motherboard only has Sanyo and Rubycon capacitors. I had not expected such quality level from Gigabyte.)

I am by no means a 3dfx fan, but this 6MB Voodoo 1 seemed special enough for me to buy it.

How did they manage to get DOS 6.22 to handle a 40GB drive ? Did they only use 8GB of it ?

It's just 4x 2GB FAT16 Partitions, everything else unallocated space.

Just a regular eBay auction for about the regular JP prices for these things. But instead of the usual (and understandable) costs to get stuff from the other side of the world, it said free shipping. Did a double-take, checked that country was correctly listed and it was still free. So bought it on Wednesday, with estimated delivery on September 23rd. Then on Sunday I got a message from FedEx that they were going to deliver the next day at my home address. Which was a problem as I hadn't exactly counted on it being so fast and I was still four countries away at the time traveling by train, so redirected to my work address, where it arrived yesterday about the same time I did.

That was seriously quick courier service. No idea who paid for it, but it certainly wasn't me 😜

That sounds sketchy . If a courier can delivery a package, and have you accept it without telling you about import taxes or giving you an option to refuse the packages based on those taxes, it feels at least unethical, maybe even illegal (depending on jurisdiction, I have no idea TBH) . It's also likely ripe for abuse, like if somebody sends you an unsolicited package with a false sky-high stated value just so you get a delayed fat tax bill . With so much stuff going through mail because of COVID-19 , someone might not even notice a given unsolicited package among their normal orders .

that's how it usually works with a lot of couriers, you get an invoice after the fact with taxes plus an extra hefty fee for them having paid it in advance for you.

was the same with DHL last time for me.

Every time that I have had to pay import taxes/duties it was on receipt of the package . My mother has actually refused delivery of an unexpected "gift" package from abroad because of unbelievably high taxes/duties . My mother and I live in Canada .

If I understand correctly, what you are telling me is that, where you live, if somebody sends you a package from abroad, whether solicited or not, you are on the hook for import taxes whose amount will only be disclosed after you have accepted the package and that you have no way of knowing what the amount will be or even refusing the package upon delivery based on said fees ?

I am no lawyer, but that sounds a lot like an extortion racket to me .

welcome to the world of courier services... it's also incredibly hard to find out what those fees actually are... they try and bury it as deep as they can in their websites...

I got a package from UPS recently (this one I had to pay on arrival) but there was no info whatsoever on the invoice how much the fee they charge actually was, there was just a total amount that included taxes and I suppose the fee as well, as it was more than taxes alone would have been.

I also did not find any info on the UPS site how much that fee is actually going to be, because they only listed the fee for taking care of customs, which was not necessary for this package as it was customs paid in advance, just had to pay VAT.

at least the postal service clearly states that they charge €10 for the service (you can't actually do customs or taxes yourself here, it always goes through either the postal service or a courier) and they clearly tell you the exact amounts calculated for customs, taxes and the fee seperately on the invoice.

Maybe laws in Canada are more strict in regards to after the fact "surprise" billing . In any jurisdiction, it boggles the mind that it is legal for somebody to drop off a package on your doorstep and have you be liable for undisclosed amounts with you having no choice in the matter and (I imagine) no recourse .

On a side node, I never order anything from abroad that goes through UPS for shipping unless I know that duties, taxes and processing fees are pre-paid at order time .

so it's a global scam 🤣

Don't know how FedEX works, but once I shipped a card to Lithuania with DHL for about 13 euro. That was what the customer paid and what I was charged from DHL, it seemed crazy knowing that they usually charge 50+ euro for a shipment like that. I guess sometimes they make promotional deliveries to "discover their services". Hope this is the case with you as well. Cheers!

Wow! I ordered a Roland SC-D70 from Japan a few months ago . The shipper was DHL . The item was something like 150-200 CAN$ shipped . Upon delivery, I had to pay the DHL delivery person something like 50-60 CAN$ for import duties, provincial and/or federal sales tax (7 or 15% in and of itself) and processing . I found that to be quite reasonable and within the realm of what I expected based on previous experiences .

I also should have mentioned that couriers here allow you to do your own customs/duties processing for a package. You basically need to go to there warehouse, fill a government form and pay duties, taxes, etc, but no processing fee to the courier . I never actually bothered to do that, but I know someone who regularly did . My guess is that there is a law in place here that forces couriers to allow the customer that option .
