On ebay.co.uk today I saw an SQ2500, which prompted me to dig out my old Aureal-branded Vortex 2. Identical. Mine has an 8830A2 chip and Rev B marked on the PCB.

Do you think this would sound any better/different than the MX300 I am using? Or would differences hardly be noticeable? I've seen reference to the Rev B being a more advanced chip but apart from a 2% speed improvement (which doesn't matter to me on this system), does it do anything else?

Maybe you'll find some information here:

But my guess would be "hardly noticeable" if it comes to general sound quality and snr.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that link before.

But there is something not right here. Articles I have seen all say SQ2500 came out in mid-1999 and they seem to say it was the first Vortex 2 card made by Aureal. The chip on mine is 8830A2 and it doesnt look like the board in that article (different colour PCB - dark purple rather than blue, plain metal jacks). And the PCB is stamped Aureal 1998.

It looks these references that Aureal starting to make its own soundcards with the SQ2500, can be a little misleading as they mean excluding OEM cards. According to http://www.3dsoundsurge.com/drivers/Vortex2/ Vortex 2 chips were used by Aureal's Vortex 2 SuperQuad Digital PCI (OEM), Aureal Vortex 2 PCI (OEM), Aureal's SQ2500, Absolute Multimedia Outrageous 3D Sound, Diamond Monster Sound II MX300, Turtle Beach Montego II, Turtle Beach's Montego II Plus, Turtle Beach's Quadzilla, Turtle Beach's Home Studio, VideoLogic's SonicVortex2, Terratec's XLerate Pro, Xitel's Storm Platinum, I/O Magic's MagicWave V2.

And it turns out that my Vortex2 is the first one mentioned, briefly reviewed here: http://www.gamesfirst.com/articles/aureal_vor … 2_superquad.htm. Not an SQ2500 after all.

Then keep looking every day. That's all any of us can do.

I was going to let this pass, but I'm way too curious now. What made you think an auction from earlier in this thread would still be around?
