...I don't know what would be the "best hardware choice" for MAXIMUM COMPATIBILITY with MSDOS/WIN98 games.
I wanna play everything: ancient EGA games from 1989 (like Commander Keen 1) and 3D Win98 games from 1998 (like Interstate 76 and Need For Speed 2).
I bought a Sound Blaster AWE64 (ISA slot) yesterday. Now I must buy the other things, like video, memory, motherboard, processor...
What do you think of this:
SOUND: Sound Blaster AWE 64 (ISA slot)
MEMORY: 64MB (don't know if is EDO or DIMM better for compatibility, and I don't know if 64MB will cause some problem with older games in MSDOS)
VIDEO: S3 Virge or Trio 4MB (PCI slot), or it's better some 16MB PCI video card?
PROCESSOR: Pentium 1 166MHz or Pentium 1 MMX 166MHz (I think Pentium 2 will not work with some games in MSDOS, what do you think?)
I found a Compaq, but don't know it's hardware and don't know if it will run Win98 games. I think it's better cost setup a PC with selected harware.
A small list of games I have:
Abe's Oddysee (win98)
Test Drive Off Road
M.A.X. (Mechanized Assault and Exploration) BEST GAME I EVER PLAYED!!
Interstate '76 (win98)
Death Rally
POD (racing game from Ubisoft, real nice game!!) (win98)
Need For Speed 1SE, 2, 3, 4
Doom (ALL of them)
Quake 1 and 2
Warcraft 1 and 2
Tomb Raider 1 and 2
Old MSDOS games from pre-1990
The question is: Do I really need to buy such SLOW computer to play MSDOS without emulation (DOSBox, etc...) ????
