I see that some 486 mobos don't have button or those chunky Varta batteries. Instead, their batteries are "merged" in to a large chip called Dallas, which are not straight forward to replace. Say if you decide not to replace this Dallas chip, and subsequently the battery inside it goes flat and dies. Does this render the mobo totally inoperable, or can you still use it, providing you re-enter every required CMOS parameter in to the BIOS whenever you switch on power?

Also, what do people replace dead Dallas chips with? - How do you get a "fresh" Dallas chip?

If it's not soldered directly on the mobo and socketed it's quite easy to find new replacements.
PM me if you needs tips on where to get new one's 😀
