Back in the day when everyone had a Windows and a Sound Blaster / Compatible, MIDI playback had that characteristic FM sound. Did the MIDI data get sent to the card as is, which the card then synthesized using the OPL chip, or did the MIDI driver read the MIDI data and drive the OPL chip?

If I install Windows into Dosbox, will I get that same FM sound from MIDI playback?
