A big box came today!

Will likely start playing with the VIA based uATX mainboard as it has a ISA slot. Hoping that slowdown utility works with this chipset...

The seller did have a 440BX board, but he couldn't get it working. I got another one coming though, also with more cpus and ram.

Here are some pics!

2 video cards, both from Creativa Labs? Didn't know they made video cards. Must be same Nvidia chips?

Nice haul.

Yes, Creative made quite a few video cards, using various different chipsets. That CT5830 appears to be a Geforce2 GTS, and the CT6980 seems to be a TNT2 M64. The real winner out of the lot of video cards, though, is that Leadtek A180... that's a GF4 MX440, basically a Geforce2 on steroids.

That Asus CUSL2-M is a good board, should be rock stable quite speedy. The MSI board looks interesting, what with Tualatin support, and it seems to also natively accept Via C3's, if you ever feel like playing with one of those. Only thing that sucks about that one is the lack of an AGP slot, so you have to choose between using a PCI slot for video, or sticking with the horrid Trident Blade IGP.

Thanks for the input!

The project is mostly for DOS games and also testing various slowdown utilities...

I am getting also a lot of various soundboard and I am planning on doing some audio recording and just general experimenting...

Ultimately I do lean a bit more towards DosBox, but I still want to play around with real gear!

I always wondered that too, my best guess was that marketing wanted to avoid the mark of the beast.
We don't want people thinking Intel powers Satan eh?

It's to do with rounding...

The 667 cpu is actually clocked at 666.666666666666 MHz so they just round it up 😁

usually they round down, like p-2 266 and the 66MHz bus.

I like that Leadtek graphics card, look like it has 128-bit DDR. But the fan is missing, I don't think it is healthy to run with just the small heatsink.

Yea it's way to powerful for what I will be doing anyway...

I have zero interest in putting windows on it. It will be pure DOS and especially experiementing what can be done speed wise and how good "slowdown" utilities like throttle or disabling cache really is...

The projects goal is to play DOS games without having to source really old gear and avoid many pitfalls (e.g. no need for AT power supply or case, no need to muck around with leaking batteries, cryptic jumpers and no manuals or BIOS updates)...

Question: Is there hope that a USB floppy and a USB CD/DVD burner will work with these boards? Haven't got a real floppy and IDE DVD drive lying around, so I might have to source these as well.

Sorry not following?

Uh, I think cdoublejj is offering to give away his cpu casing with the AT power supply, for the price of shipping. Unless, if I'm wrong...🤣

Oops, meant CPU. 😀

Oh! good point. I didn't check the cpus on the boards yet!

Well the 2 Asus boards come with P3s 1000 / 256 /133.

The cpu on the VIA board has a heat spreader! It is a Celeron and the printing shows 1000A / 256 / 100 / 1.475V

EDIT: I looked up the specs and it's a Tualatin (130 nm) based Celeron 😁

Celeron 1000A SL5ZF 1000 MHz 256 KB 100 MT/s 10× 1.5 V 27.8/29.5 W Socket 370 January 3, 2002 RK80530RY001256

Nice mod with the black Celeron cooler 🤣 (top right card)

The MSI board is almost perfect! The only things missing is the AGP slot and atleast 1 more DIMM socket (and maybe DDR 😜 )

The heatspreader you're referring to means it's a Socket 370 FC-PGA2 processor. Many of those will be Tualatin but there are some FC-PGA2's that are Coppermine based.

your Celeron 1000A SL5ZF is also a Tualatin which means it's got double the cache (256k instead of 128k) that the Coppermine Celeron 1000 has. The flipside is it won't work on most other s370 board.

Depends what you mean by 'work.' It's highly unlikely that those boards support booting from USB, so you're not going to be able to install an OS by that method, but once the OS and appropriate USB drivers have been loaded, you should be able to use 'em.

Thanks! Yes I was hoping to boot from them! Oh well I will just have to source a floppy and optical drive...
