Is it allowed to mismatch one manufacturers drivers with another manufacturers video card? I read recently that Metabyte drivers for their Voodoo 2 boards had certain advantages over the drivers used by other manufacturers of Voodoo 2 boards. Would it be possible to install the Metabyte drivers and reap the advantages with any Voodoo 2 card?

Hmm I don't see why not?

It is possible that the driver checks the BIOS to see what the make is, but I guess you could just flash the BIOS?

Are you referring to their WickedGL MiniGL ICD? They didn't make that exclusive for their hardware. You can use them, and other than the annoying having to press 'C', they are siginificantly faster than standard 3dfx gl icds.

There is also a Creative 3dfx GL ICD that does 512x512 textures "locked" to their hardware, but it is very slow. It is probably not even real 512, in-driver 256x256 splitting and because there are visible seams that give that technique away.
