I just got myself a Promise IDE card. Do I need to change a jumper or something on my ASUS PVI-486SP3 motherboard to disable the on-board controller or is there something in BIOS?

Could be either...

Look in the BIOS first. If there is nothing than look up some online documentation about jumpers

Well I didn't see anything in the manual, but I am not sure if I have the whole manual. It was the one posted on here somewhere. I just looked in the BIOS and there is a setting that says "Onboard Local BUS IDE" and there is a setting that disables it. I guess that's it!

I haven't got my ASUS PVI-486SP3 in front of me at the moment, so the following thought is from hazy memory only: when you boot up from a PCI IDE controller card, I think you set one of the BIOS set up options to say: "Boot from SCSI", even though the controller card you have is IDE. I think.

I will look in to that. I will be putting the card in the machine within the next hour.

It's in the BIOS.
Go to Chipset Features Setup and disable Onboard Local Bus IDE.

Yeah, I just did that. Just got to relocate the gear to a different room, stick the card in and give it a go.

Well I have the Promise card in with HDD in IDE1 and CD ROM in IDE2. I disabled the OnBoard local BUS but couldn't find any option to boot from SCSI. When turned on the promise card says "detecting" but never detects anything. The computer just stays there and doesn't go any further.

Set it to boot from C: instead of SCSI

It is set to boot from C:. Somebody on here thought that you had to set it to boot from SCSI even though it isn't SCSI (see above).

What other boot options do you have? A: C: CD-ROM maybe?

AFAIK these addon controllers had their own BIOS. Are there any jumpers on the card? Do you have a manual for that card?

EDIT: See if you can find your card here:

I don't have a manual for it, it is this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Promise-16Bit-ISA-EIDE-MA … =item483c55c898

The boot options are A, C or C, A.

From looking at that picture there are some jumpers on there.

Change JP5 (the one that says BIOS enable)

Also for the documentation, does the controller show it's model name at the Boot screen:

You can see a list of legacy Promise products here:

I just took the card out and that isn't the one I have! Sorry.

It has CK99 on the back although it is made by Promise. I am trying to find a picture.

Are the jumpers labeled?

Make sure IDE is set to enabled and set to Primary.

The BIOS enable/disable and BIOS address setting you just have to trial and error.

Also on this Promise CK99 card there are no jumpers, apart from one which has LED on it so I assume that is the HDD LED. I am still looking for a manual or something on this card.

Why do you want to use this card? Harddisk capacity unsupported by the system BIOS?

Because I have been told that the IDE controller on this board is buggy and I have had data loss problems on this machine already (I don't think the actual HDD is bad by the way).

No jumpers is a little bit odd...

Is it ISA or PCI?

PCI. On one of he chips it says "PDC20267" it also has "ASSY 9952-10 REV B3" on the board as well as "CK00 94V-0". Also has Ultra 100 written on it.
