Would I be able to use a Voodoo 2 in conjunction with my PCI Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 4MB on the ASUS 486 Socket 3 Motherboard PVI-486SP3? Back in the 90's I never had a Voodoo so I do not know much about them.

Would a Voodoo 2 be the best fit for this 486 DX4100 system? Or would a Voodoo 1 work better? I would like to be able to run Tomb Raider and Quake with a better graphics.

Thanks.

Both voodoo 1 and 2 will work correctly on this motherboard. I recommend you to use Voodoo 1 because voodoo 2 wasn't 100% compatible with voodoo 1 and some old games from voodoo1 era may work incorrectly with voodoo 2.

Well I don't seem to be able to find any PCI Voodoo 1's on eBay. Are they rare?

** Edit **

What about this? Only 4MB though. Found a bunch of other 3DFX's but ones with more RAM seem to be really expensive.

I think that Diamond Monster 3D is the best 4MB Voodoo 1 card (graphics chips overclocked to 57MHz instead of 50MHz in reference board).

If you want better voodoo 1 card you should look for Canopus Pure3D or Miro Hiscore3D. These beasts contain 6MB ram and Voodoo chips overclocked to 60Mhz! Unfortunately both require non standard voodoo-vga connector which is very hard to find.

I will see if I can get it. I will need a cable to link it to my 2D card won't I? It seems that doesn't come with it. What kind of cable is that?

I think have one already, although it might be about 6 feet long!

I think that you need a pentium, and running at least 120-133MHz for a voodoo1 and a pentium 2 for voodoo2. Using a 486 I believe there's going to be a huge bottleneck.

It is a DX4100. I do have faster chip that might fit in that socket. I can't remember what it is though.

** Edit **

I think the other chip might be running at 133mhz. Not sure if it would make this card run ok though. If not I do have a Pentium 2 DOS system as well.

A quick search led me to this url : http://www.soldcentralfl.com/quakecoop/compare2.htm

I think, in order to enjoy the voodoo card, you'd better install it on your Pentium 2 pc.

It does make me wonder how it would perform in the 486 though. Would I be able to run the improved graphics in Tomb Raider for example and would the be smooth? The only way may be to just try it.

Yeap, it would be nice to test it. But only if you own a voodoo card. If you're going to buy it, just to see if it works, in my opinion, it's not worth it. I would try to find a nice set of voodoo2 cards to install them in sli mode on the pentium 2, and it's going to be fine. Even if voodoo2 isn't compatible with some older games, there are patches to fix it. Check this out : http://www.3dgw.com/faq/moodys_voodoo2_faq.htm

I think you might be able to squeeze decent performance out of it for Tomb Raider, but honestly anything beyond that is going to be iffy.

I agree that you need around a 200mhz Pentium to really take advantage of even a Voodoo1.

I was running a V2 in my P90 setup but eventually removed it and put a USB 2.0 card in its place. Besides tomb raider, which wasn't even 30FPS, nothing played well on it.

Yes, I have got identical one. (:

I'm using voodoo 1 in my 486 computer (overclocked to 180MHz). I tested Quake (640x480 framerate~20fps ), Descent 1 and 2 with 3dfx patch (640x480 smooth), MDK 1 with 3dfx patch (playable - sporadic slowdowns), Duke Nukem 3D without 3dfx path (800x600 very smooth ). I'm going to publish some video. If you replace your DX4 100 by AMD 5x86 133MHz [or Cyrix 5x86 100MHz] and overclock it to 160MHz [120MHz] you will obtain similar results.

I was wondering is my motherboard (ASUS 486 Socket 3 Motherboard PVI-486SP3) capable of overclocking? I am not in front of the 486 right now. If it is I assume it is all done through jumper settings?

Afaik most 486's seem to actually be quite easy to overclock, especially if you have a board that supports the "magic jumper", meaning it can halve the PCI bus compared to the FSB.
However, even though the 133Mhz chips (which are usually AMD 5x86's)

If you want good fpu performance, maybe a Pentium Overdrive wou8ld be a good idea?
