Does anyone know if any of the readily available IBM 486SLC2 upgrade kits (the ones that clips over the original processor and have a socket on top for a 80387SX fpu) are compatible with a 286?

I've seen a couple of designs:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rare-CPU-Chip-IBM-33G04 … =item1e62a9683c

I know a few people on here have installed 286-486 upgrades (I know the SLC is not a proper 486!) - are they specific versions or the same as the 386-486 version? These are listed as for specific IBM models (all 386sx based, I believe).

Actually, scratch the second one - it appears to mount in a socket, not clip over the original processor.

Umm... no. I don't think I've ever seen a surface-mounted 286, plus the number of pins for 286 and 386 differ. Your kit will upgrade a 386SX, therefore it cannot upgrade a 286 😀.

Ah, mine is a surface mount:

I'll have to keep an eye out for a 286 specific version - Kingston, Evergreen and Asus all apparently had 286 specific 486slc upgrade kits.

I suspect you're probably outta luck then... I don't think there were any clip-on upgrades of the sort, that fit over a PLCC chip. Or if there were, they're gonna be rare enough that you're unlikely to ever find one.
