USB mouse and DOS feasible?

Hello folks, I was using a PS/2 mouse and CuteMouse driver for DOS up until now. I got a new mouse yesterday, because quite frankly I was tired of the whole "clean your mouse once every two weeks" business. So I got a USB mouse and thought that by using a USB to PS/2 adapter it would work as a PS/2 mouse, but unfortunately it won't! I've tried enabling Legacy USB Support on the bios of my motherboard (Asus CUSL-2), but it isn't recognised in either Windows or DOS. As a USB mouse it works great under Windows, but I want to use it under DOS too.

Any ideas?

According to the data sheet (available here) this mouse only works on USB ports. I'm afraid you'll have to look for a model which specifically supports operation on PS/2 ports.

Hmm that's a good topic!

I think we could really do with a list of USB mice, that are compatible on PS/2 ports!

Found this mouse from Lenovo:

Attaches to PS/2 port via USB-to-PS/2 Connector Cable

And this is a really really good gaming mouse from MS Also states PS/2:

We could add to that list any USB mouse that is sold with a PS/2 adapter included in the package.

Though frankly, it seems easier to just go get a PS/2 mouse (though they are getting a bit less common).

Yea, I got this Samsung PS/2 mouse and it's not very good.

It also cost more. Likely because it's now a niche product.

Wow....all these years and have never known that a USB mouse couldn't work with the adapter. Learn something new every day.

It's kinda the same for PS/2 mice when using a Serial adapter. If the mouse doesn't support the serial protocol internally, the adapter will not work.

From CuteMouse's homepage:

'Modern BIOSes often make USB mice visible through the PS/2 interface if you enable "legacy" support in BIOS setup.'

I have a working UHCI driver for DOS, but it eats up > 100K of conventional memory so it's of no use to me...

these are ps2-only optical mice, no longer in production... I had one since when they where first announced and is working excellent after all those years... so I thought a dozen will last me a lifetime 🤣 🤣 🤣

I've got a small lot of these as well (may not be the exact same model though), these are excellent mice!!
Like em a lot!

Often these were rebranded as Dell, HP and Fujitsu also 😉

Edit:One problem some of these mice have, sometimes the mouse pointer teleports to some random location, but hey, I got them for around €2 each couple years back 😀

There are various versions of the Microsoft Optical/Intellimouse that are dual USB/PS2 compatible - I've got one here that states explicitly on the underside it supports both... the part number is X802652.

What I *would* like to find though, is another Logitech Trackman Wheel - the old white one with the red ball. Now that is a lovely thing... I have one on my main desktop, but I would love to have a second one on the KVM switch I run my SGI's, Amiga and retro PC through.

My last mouse (Logitech) was also working via a USB->PS2 adapter.

Now I have a PS2 only cheap Genius Netscroll one.

I am well aware PS2 ports are becoming a thing of the past for mainboards manufacturers. The trend is to add more USB ports. Thanks God newer bioses still have some rudimentary USB support for legacy Opertating Systems.
