What is that little extension on one of the PCI slots on this motherboard?

lo
it looks like some kind of manufacturer specific
slot for some kind of pci riser.
a quick search reveals this for example which
probably isn't for that board but gives you an idea:

It can't be a riser. The riser slots would conflict with the slots on the board if you put anything in them.
Nope, it's not a riser slot. I believe it's actually for some special sort of SCSI controller (and the TH99 diagram for a similar Acer motherboard seems to back that up). I've seen 'em on other boards of that era too, but I've never seen one of the actual cards that use it.
It looks a bit like Media Bus (wiki page here), though I never seen a shorter looking one like that before.
Media Bus was used by ASUS for a special type of SCSI&Sound card I think?
Edit:What does the manual say about it?

Yeah but the media bus was Asus only.
This is yet another proprietary interface.

whilst that may be true it's still not a
definite reason why it can't be a riser
although to be honest, it doesn't really
seem important either way.
for example i have a supermicro 1u
rackmount chassis here (812i-400C) which is
quite redundant but ready for
deployment (if ever) which has
a X5DEi-GG mainboard. the riser
in that only supplies a single PCI-X
slot.
the point i am making is that the
same mainboard may have been
utilised in different means of
deployment.

I can't recall the name of it, but this looks similar to an extra bus provided for graphics cards back when ISA cards stopped providing enough bandwidth. I owned one, hrm, wish I could remember.
No, it is not VLB.
1+1=10
It's an Acer V35N motherboard, but I can't find anything about that extension of the PCI slot anywhere.

Cheers, now I got something to work with.
So you're considering buying it from the bay? 😉
Edit:After having finally found a manual from the Acer website itself (which was a feat in itself as it requests somekind of system ID number) I managed to download the manual, only to find out it looks garbled no matter what program I opened the files with -_-
In the end I managed to open them in Windows ME, run in VPC and 'it' actually had a skematic of the strange connector! 😁
BUT...in the entire manual, it makes no mention as to what it actually is, so I'm back at square one.
Well, at least I tried 😁
Sorry for the necro.
The manual I found for the V35N says: Ether-SCSI card slot.
I know Acer made a VGA/SCSI combo card which looks to have the same extended piece compared to a PCI card.
