As I'm ahead on my builds so far, and it's payday 😁 I have decided to go for a Socket 370 build. I've owned a few over the years, the best being a Coppermine 1Ghz which I build about 4-5 years ago now for my parents to use for general purposes (though I did bench it for a few days before taking it to their house).

I just bought 3 CPU's from ebay. 2 of them are socket 370 1.2Ghz P3's, and 1 is a 1.4Ghz P3. All are tualatins. I've never had a tualatin before, and I need advice. Can someone point me towards some commonly available good motherboards to run these things with? I'm looking mainly for overclocking options in the bios and an AGP slot. As I've never really looked into these boards in a big way before I don't have any ideas what to buy and any help or knowledge would be great.

Iris030380 😉

By the way, I would not be opposed to a board with RD-Ram slots, as long as someone could tell me exactly what RD-Ram I need to buy. Are RIMMS much faster than PC-133? Also bear in mind I'd hate to be stuck with a board and have to look forever for compatible ram.

Thanks. 😁

Forget about RIMM, unless RIMM is your intended target 😉

When it comes to Tualatin boards, theres basically 2 choices:Intel or VIA

The Intel one is slightly faster and easier to set up while the VIA's may be more troublesome in some cases (think VIA latency patch) BUT unlike Intel, are not limited to only 512MB RAM
A common Tualatin board with Intel is the ASUS TUSL2-C and a common VIA one is the ASUS TUV4X (which has 4 RAM slots, but a problem with mounting a 3-holed HSF clip as a tiny resistor get in it's way).

When it comes to buying, the best advice I could give you is to get a board that does not have bulging caps.

Also, before buying a board, a few (often OEM) boards might have some problems running Tualatin-s (=the 512KB Tualatin, instead of the standard 256KB Tualatin).

And be sure the board you're buying has an AGP slot 😜

Hi thanks for the quick reply! 😁

I had no idea there were so few compatible boards for these CPU's. The two that you mentioned, I can only find one of on ebay UK right now and that item is located in Greece and is selling for a BIN price of £60! The intel version I cannot find any at all. Are they really so rare? Do I have any other options except these two?

😮

There are actually a few boards available. I had posted a list once I was making of the chipsets.

Ahh yes, found it in this thread: Socket 370 mobo recommendation required - for a 1.4 GHz Tualatin

My choice would be the Asus TUV4X. Also, whatever problems VIA chipsets faced in the 694A era were resolved by the 694x and Tualatin supporting 694T which are both as stable and fast as the 815.

The only problem with the TUV4X is that right around the CPU Socket theres a tiny resistor blocking the use of HSF's which use the wide 3-pin mounting clip. Nice one ASUS! -_-

Is it possible to relocate that resistor somehow?

I think it's easier to just snip a part of the HSF clip instead 😉
Or just find a HSF that clips onto 1 or 2 tabs. But it's still annoying as the best HSF usually have the clips that use all 3 tabs

Edit:Made a couple pics 😉

Thanks for taking the time to find this.

Of all those boards, absolutely none are available on ebay right now, expect one in the US which would be £25 for the board and £25 postage. I should have looked into this more before I bought the CPU's. Ah well...

You can use these CPU's on Coppermine-ready slot-1 and socket 370 boards. Many of these boards can accept a Tualatin CPU by using a Tualatin "slotket" for the slot-1 boards or by using a lin-lin adapter for socket 370 boards. Keywords: upgradeware slot-t / Powerleap / Lin-lin adapter.

thanks for the list
where i live i was able to grab a soyo 7vba133U
fantastic board with universal agp and isa slot. and very rare too because normally you can only find the version without the " U" at the end.

i love it for my retro PC. i was able to get it with a 1.4ghz CPU but when i boot it it says 1.4celeron

i wonder what is the real difference between 1.4 tualatin and 1.4 celeron socket 370.

There are also socket 370 industrial boards, such as the Ipox 3ETI23 (i have one) that are still available .

Pros :
- stable
- name brand capacitors
- 3 ISA slots
- Ethernet on board
- supports 512K cache Tualatin-S
- ISA slots support DMA and work well with a GUS Classic, an AWE64/AWE32 and Audiotrix 3D/XG

Cons :
- Not much overclocking potential
- ISA slots use an ITE8888 bridge and do not work with a GUS PnP (DMA issue)

Do you support the Empire when you watch Star Wars? I lived through that shitstorm and RAMBUS is still evil. Combine that with a power hungry, blast-furnace heating and underperforming Pentium4 and you have retro-hell not heaven.

If you are going 370 you might want to look for a Via C3 cpu so you can under/overclock it by tweaking the multiplier instead of playing chicken with your FSB.

Just so you people know, that was a six-year-bump...

Tualatin Celeron has 100MHz FSB (as opposed to 133MHz) and less L2 cache. I remember reading somewhere that the Celeron's L2 cache also has higher latency.

There's also a more recent list on here http://www.vogonswiki.com/index.php/List_of_S … 70_motherboards
It does include some other features (like ISA slots and VIA C3 compatibility) and not all boards featured are Tualatin boards, but it is sortable and may include boards not listed in the older list 😀
