I'm wondering about the card in the picture with the AU8810A1 chip on it posted by AurealDieHard. Is it really a Montego II? Every Montego II I've ever seen has a AU8830 chip on it. The AU8810, AFAIK, was a budget chip that Aureal put out so they could sell cheaply to OEMs right before they got swallowed up by Creative.

8810 is called Vortex Advantage. Vortex 1 and 2 were pin compatible so 8810 may be too, allowing them to all be used on the same board designs.

Are there any differences in the feature set or sound quality? If AU8810 was a budget chip for OEM cards like I have been led to believe, then I would expect it not to be as good.

Vortex 1 is more powerful than Vortex Advantage but it still has some hardware acceleration and A3D 1.0 support.

Turtle Beach only released sound cards based off the Vortex 1 chipset (Turtle Beach Montego A3DXstream) and Vortex 2 chipset (Turtle Beach Montego II models).

The Vortex Advantage chipset is better than Vortex 1 chipset, the Vortex Advantage chipset is basically a Vortex 1 plus equalizer.

Well that's obviously not true because here is the pic

125ip.jpg

And the caption that went with it

"Turtle Beach Montego II w/ DSP Daughter board adapter at bottom"

And since it's boxed, I assume the original poster knows what he has. I am pretty sure that is a Montego II Plus by the daughterboard. My Quadzilla has a completely different daughterboard from that one.

No, the caption for that image is clearly incorrect, it looks more like an Aureal Vortex Advantage sound card. Note the Aureal references listed on the card, which would not be on a model from another company.

I questioned it originally because of the AU8810 chip but didn't notice that it said Aureal on it. Maybe the card and the daughterboard are mismatched?

Oh, and I don't know if this list has been posted anywhere on Vogons before, but I thought it might be of interest to those viewing this topic

A fairly comprehensive list of games with A3D sound support. It's a very old list, though, so I'm not sure if any other games with A3D support were released after it was compiled. I'm sure there's probably a few people here who can fill in any blanks.

Obviously, as the 8-pin ribbon cable connector is not visible on the AU8810A1 PCI card. It should be near the oscillator. No way to connect the I/O bracket to that PCI card. I do see 8 solder points though.
Interestingly the AU8810A1 PCI is equipped with a coax connector already, S/PDIF-out I suppose.

I wish I knew how to enable the Montego II Home Studio S/PDIF bracket from the DOS prompt. I do have an unofficial Vortex-2 mixer program for DOS, but it has just basic functionality.

After doing some digging, I found an Aureal Vortex SQ1500 for sale on ebay and it looks just like the card in the picture, even down to the AU8810A1 chip, so I think that solves the mystery.

Oh, and you need a special driver for quad stereo and S/PDIF support. The Aureal reference driver only supports 2 speaker stereo and no S/PDIF. You'll probably have to find the driver CD for a Quadzilla, Plus, or Home Studio version to get the driver you need.

And if you're trying to use it with any version of Windows past Windows ME or with Linux, then I don't think you're going to find any driver that supports the daughterboard at all. The Microsoft driver only supports basic stereo functionality and none of the special features of the card and Aureal never released a whole lot of information about the inner workings of the Vortex chips to make it easy for a third party to write a driver.

See attached screenshot. There are still alot of options with the appropriate driver and fixes in windows 2000. Although I haven't tested it extensively. (I don't care that much for 3D sound enhancement currently.) The daughterboard header works! In fact, all midi options that are visible on the screenshot work.

But does it work in true quad stereo or do the rear channels merely duplicate the front channels?

Don't think I will test that anytime soon. This Windows 2000 system has just the basic card without 4 speaker I/O bracket. That bracket is tied up in another system.
