If you are comparing the Quake3 benchmark of a Cyrix MII at 266 MHz to a Pentium 166MMX, you should really be consistant with which graphics card you are using.

From my work on the Ultimate 686 Benchmark Comparison (in progress), I noticed that a Cyrix MII @ 233 Mhz yields about the same results of a Pentium 166MMX in Quake 2.

Pentium 166MMX
Quake2 - OpenGL - 17.9 fps
Quake2 - Software - 10.1 fps

Cyrix MII 233 MHz
Quake2 - OpenGL - 17.7 fps
Quake2 - Software - 9.9 fps

For added comparison,

Cyrix MII 292 MHz (83.3 x 3.5)
Quake2 - OpenGL - 22.6 fps
Quake2 - Software - 12.5 fps

which is a little bit faster than a Pentium 233MMX,

Pentium 233MMX
Quake2 - OpenGL - 22.7 fps
Quake2 - Software - 11.9 fps

If Quake2 is a good approximation for most games of the time (1998-1999), then the fastest, and last, Cyrix CPU (MII-433GP) was about as good as a Pentium 233MMX. For office/internet applications, the Cyrix MII-433GP would be a much better choice than a P233.

The 292 MHz Cyrix MII was tested using an 83 MHz FSB, so perhaps running the MII at 100 MHz x 3.0 would equate to about a Pentium 262MMX in Quake2?

For your interest,

Pentium 262MMX
Quake2 - OpenGL - 25.1 fps
Quake2 - Software - 13.7 fps

Plan your life wisely, you'll be dead before you know it.

The hardest part was finding non-80pin IDE cables without a blanking pin.

I gave up on that.

Now I just use new cables, with small drill bit (~1mm) and a steady hand!

If you aren't shy about spending money, you can just buy the stuff from an electronics store and terminate your own cables.

Alright. Got a benchmark working in quake 2 demo.

Software 640x480 9.6fps
OpenGL 1024x768 32fps

This was with the demo benchmark so not sure if the results are comparable.

FYI I am very happy with the GeForce MX4000 PCI. No fan, doesn't get hot, seems to run well and it only cost $12 on eBay. I should have purchased another one!
