Creative had their own API for the 3D Blaster called CGL that was running on the VLB version of the card. When the 3D Blaster PCI came out, it was based on the Rendition Verite V1000 chipset.

I'm wondering if the 3D Blaster PCI is able to run CGL games(with patches)? There were patches made for the PCI version specially. So do other Rendition cards support this or is it only creative's card? One example of such a patch is Actua Soccer (posted here on Vogons). Other games I can come up with are Screamer II and Euro 96.

The specifications for the V1000 says CGL is supported:

Would be nice if this can be confirmed or not.

Actua Soccer Patch for 3D Blaster PCI

If you have an early version of "Actua Soccer" with no 3D Blaster support,
you will need to replace your CD with an updated one, supplied by Gremlin.
(To check which version you have, search the "Actua Soccer" CD for *.cgl
files - if you find some then you have the 3D Blaster compatible version.
If not, you have the software-only version.)

If you have the software-only version you can upgrade your CD for the nominal charge of:

£5 inc. post and packing (UK Only)

£7 inc. post and packing (Rest of World)

Just send a cheque / postal order (in pounds sterling) or credit card details (Access
or Visa Only) along with your original copy of Actua Soccer and your postal address
details to:

Gremlin Interactive Ltd
Actua Soccer 3D Blaster Upgrade
Carver House
Carver Street
Sheffield

If you have a version of "Actua Soccer" with 3D Blaster support, you'll need
to do the following for the game to take advantage of your 3D Blaster PCI.

1. Copy the Vritb170.cgl file that comes with this readme file into the
directory where you originally installed "Actua Soccer" (normally
c:\asoccer). Then just run the game as normal by typing soccer.

Running the game in an 8 Meg system.

When running "Actua Soccer" on a 3D Blaster in an 8 Meg system, memory space
is very tight. If the game finds that it has not got enough memory then it
will drop to running in software-only mode. To avoid this, firstly make
sure you are not loading up any unnecessary device drivers and TSR's
(especially make sure you are not loading Smartdrive). If the game still
fails to run on the hardware, switch off the commentary: (From the main
menu go to the environment menu, choose the sound option then drag the
commentary slider volume level right down to zero). This should allow you
to play the game with 3D acceleration.

I can mention that the Actua Soccer 3D blaster version looks like this:

The 3D Blaster PCI with Verite V1000 will indeed run CGL. There are a few CGL games on its installation CDs. These games apparently look for the 3D Blaster's BIOS and so won't run on other V1000 cards.

I'm not sure if all CGL games were updated with V1000 support though.

Interesting. Then it seems that not all CGL games do a BIOS check.

Laguna3D supports CGL? Was it really accelerated? Laguna3d has perspective correction accuracy problems so it's pretty obvious if it's in use.

CGL version executable starts in software mode if no supported card is found. I experienced the same when making the Youtube comparison video. So no, it does not support CGL.
