I suspect the left/right channels are reversed on my midi daughterboard (XR385 hosted on a YMF718 card). What's the best way to test this, maybe a midi file with a note panned left and another panned right?

At the start of Doom E1M1 the guitars are mostly panned to the left on my setup, does anyone else get this or should they actually be panned to the right?

It is a common issue.
I use Doom 1 Pandemonium.mid as a test, the song should start on the left.

Yep, it's reversed. I have an offset adaptor between the YMF718 and XR385 so should be able to reverse it back there.

As an aside I was testing against the MT-32 in GM mode, before I realised the MT-32's pan is reversed too. Doom sounds surprisingly good on the MT actually 😀
