Hi all,

I have an ASUS P5A 1.04 revision Super Socket 7 motherboard - luckily this board will accept the K6-2+ and K6-3+ line of AMD cpu's [flashed with 1011.005 BIOS] however what is the fastest AMD K6-3+ CPU I can install in it?

I googled for info but most older forum posts where confirming K6-2+ and K6-3+ compatabilites with the 1011.005 BIOS but not CPU speed specific.

Thanks for any and all help. 😀

Probably even the fastest one! Get yourself one of those 500 chips and clock it at 600 and you should be fine 😀

Thanks. Now finding one is gonna be the real stinker, lmao. K6-3+ stuff is pretty hard to find these days. 😢

Well 100 MHz FSB and 6x multiplier is as good as it gets 😀

550 is pretty much the top CPU. You can overclock but there is a reason AMD never made a 600 MHz version 😀

If you need that much speed you're much better off getting a Slot 1 machine rather than running SS7 on the edge of its limit.

Hey Mau1wurf1977,

Thanks for your reply, i'm basing the PC build on your DOS Time Machine (I like the idea of 386 & 486 compatability with cache disables). Right now I have a K6-2 350Mhz CPU and SVGA/VESA mode games (even Screamer 2 although around 15? fps) run at playable framerates, i'd just like a little bit more frames for games such as Screamer 2 though. 😀

Tomb Raider runs 24+fps (or so it seems) in SVGA mode, and Quake @ 640x480 is around 17fps. The full specs of the machine is in my sig. 😀

I do have a Pentium III 700Mhz CPU and ASUS P3BF-v1.04 440BX motherboard, but it runs too fast to emulate an 386 because only the L1 cache can be disabled and even with that disabled it runs faster than any 486.

They can still be found but you have to be willing to do international purchases. When I had mine I bought it from a seller in china for hardly nothing and one or two people on this forum have commented that there are some to be had in bulk in Germany but I don't have eBay anymore. Those K6-3E and the older 250nm models are even harder to find but very much worth the effort.

On a far away planet reading your posts in the year 10,191.

Yea I got that K6 from Germany as well 😀

It was a very low power version, just 1.6V and overclocks like a dream...

That is interesting as you usually get a 386SX with a PIII and L1 disabled...

Hmmmm, how did you find these? I been searching on ebay.com since yesterday and these listings DO NOT pull up. 😠

*** EDIT: Ah, I had to chose "Worldwide" under the Item Location, in order for it to show up. 😎

Yes! Got the CPU from that seller 😀

Did you pay him via PayPal directly when you did Buy it Now?

The reason i'm asking is his Purchase policy, etc is helluva confusing... that or Google Translate borked it all up. Basically it translated to that you need to wait up to 24 hours for email from their automated system... and it will have a link to their checkout system? Perhaps he meant the purchase confirmation from eBay?

It seems though that perhaps that policy is for B2B ebayers and not the average consumer because it goes on to mention alot about POS systems, etc.

Germans have a TON of really cool hardware, but most of them don't ship overseas 🙁

I've noticed, they habor it all from us. 😜

Same for Amiga and Commodore 64 stuff, tons of it in Germany and Europe in general, not so much at all over here in the USA, especially Amiga related stuff. 😒

As for shipping, yeah the cost of shipping is horrible these days and customs can be a real douche to handle too.

Anything Commodore was HUGE in Germany. I believe the Americans hat Apple and in the UK the BBC Micro, Amstrad and all of that.

The C64 and Amiga were hot sellers in Germany and most Germans had one or the other, or both.

Many of the really good games are therefore PAL and that might be a reason why the Amiga wasn't as popular in the US.

True that. I've been searching for a long time for a Commodore 1551 floppy drive (the black one with the high speed serial connection used by the Plus 4) and the only place I EVER see them for sale is Germany.

Or an Atari ST, or a PC/XT/AT clone. Of course I can't do statistics based on my personal observations.

I'd say it's the other way round. The Amiga was more popular in Europe so there were more Amiga developers in Europe who obviously primarily developed on PAL systems.
