One of the features of my MM-401 clone is that, according to the manual:

Runs on any PC at any speed, including PC/AT/386/486’s/Pentiums

Which of the original Roland MPU-401 cards have problems on newer processors? And what kind of behavior is exhibited?

I can tell you that the MPU401AT works fine in Super Socket 7 machines.

Apart from that, MT-32 is really ideal for games that run well on a 386SX and 386DX. Anything newer generally used General MIDI.

Assuming the motherboard runs a "standard" ISA bus rate, none of Roland's MPU-401 variants should exhibit timing issues. With a non-standard bus rate, they all can and will, including the MPU-401/AT. If an MT-32 is connected, timing-related issues can manifest as "Excl. Checksum Error" messages being displayed on the LCD.

In addition, other sorts of issues can occur when using an MIF-IPC card in an AT-class or newer system.

I can also verify that the LAPC-I and MPU-IPC-T don't have a problem running in a p1/200mmx machine

I'm actually running it on a Core 2 Duo at 2Ghz. Any ideas on what a good test would be? 🤣

Well your GAMES will likely cause issues 😀

Try Monkey Island and Wing Commander.

No problem with playing the Monkey Island and Wing Commander intro music on the MT-32.

What settings do you use on your mainboard? FSB? Multi? Caches?

Wing Commander should be unplayable.
