Anyone remember my problems with getting a CD-ROM working on a 386?

Well, history repeats itself!!!!!11one

I hooked up two known working drives (not at the same time) and got the same problems with both.

Configuration
1) HDD primary MASTER
2) CD-ROM secondary SLAVE

OAKCDROM.SYS installs fine and I can list the files fine using DIR. The problem pops-up when I want to install software. Here's an example from Larry Collector's Edition:

The CD is original and error free... what the f... is wrong?

Some of those ATAPI drives don't seem to work as slaves on old IDE controllers. Try making it a master on a secondary or tertiary controller.

If I try to add a 2nd controller, system won't POST and reports a HDD controller failed error.

I tried replacing controllers and I get the same error (CDR101: Not ready reading drive D).

Why does this have to be such a problem??

1) generic no-name controller card
2) SLAVE, doesn't work, if I try CS on both drives
3) CONFIG:
device=c:\dos\himem.sys
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe /noems
device=c:\drivers\oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
dos=high,umb
files=30
buffers=30

AUTOEXEC:
@echo off
cls
mscdex /d:mscd001

I was going to say you should use VIDE-CDD.SYS since i always use it, but did not have an idea that oak driver would fail on you since it detected and installed your drive but unable to read right.

Good thing it is not hardware related.
