I did win the MSI 6905 Master slotket but It has not arrived yet.
I get to play with this crap board while I wait 😀.

A Tualeron @ 1400 mhz with 133 mhz memory on the Biostar board scores about the same as a Coppermine Celeron @ 950 mhz with 112 mhz memory on a Abit BH6 when it comes to SuperPi.
The Biostar M6VCGs 3dmark 2001 score with the Tualeron + Quadro 980 XGL is only 6910p vs over 8000p using the Aopen AX6BC board with a Coppermine P3 1000.

This board is even bad compared to other cheap brand VIA Apollo Pro boards...
I can really see why people prefer Intel 440BX. Even a cheap BX board performs like a BX board.

It is nice to see that a FC-PGA VIA 694X board can work with a Tualeron. It should work with the P3 1400-S aswell since it supports 133 mhz FSB.
But... this is not the board you are seeking!

The CPU is from the Korean guy.
I read in some old thread here on Vogons that someone had problems with CPUs from him but the one I got works great.
It even overclocks to 14*115 = 1610 mhz on this crap Biostar board and thats with 1.475V

When I use the computer it dosnt feel as slow as some benchmarks indicate. Sisoft Sandra seems to agree with the VIA platform better than than SuperPi and 3Dmark do.
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 runs perfectly @ 1024*768 32bit with max details 😀 and it is the most demanding game I will use a Windows 98 system for... I think.

If you order more than one CPU the price gets better.
I would like one more Celeron for testing and benching.
I would like two p3 1400-S for a future project and one for testing and benching.

But if the package gets stuck at customs with 4 CPUs that would suck.

Finally some real performance numbers!

How does the Tualeron perform compared to your Windows 98 systems?
I am pretty sure the memory speed is the bottle neck in SuperPi and all 3dmark tests.
I can bench @ 1732 mhz but that setting is only 5% faster and needs more voltage.

That Coppermine score is a bit too close to the performance of my Celeron 1400@1635 system for my liking.

Yesterday I got a package I totally had forgot about.

A little more than a week ago I placed a bid on a motherboard and a few CPUs.
The bid I placed was 10 SKR = 1 Euro and I did not think I would win but I did.
The board was not really anything I thought I would use in this kind of build because it lacks an ISA slot and I like to have one should I ever need it.
I placed a bid on the board because I was curious and wanted to see how it performed.

The board was sold as untested and had dirt on it. At least I hope it is dirt...
I thought I might aswell test the board at once. I placed a Coppermine P3 933 in the socket and the system posted.
I installed Windows 98 and did some overclocking and performance tests.
I managed to beat my AX6BC + Tualeron 1400@1400 SuperPi score with the Coppermine @ only 1100 mhz.
With the Tualeron 1400 I managed to improve its overclocked SuperPi score even though this board cant beat the Aopen AX6BC clock for clock.

This will probably be the motherboard I will use in my Windows 98 build for DX7 + DX8 games™.
This board does not suffer from any of the problems my Aopen AX6BC shows.
I will also be able to use a P3 1400-S. [FSB > *] seem to be accurate for these platforms.
This board is not a 440BX board as planned but what is it?
Who can identify the motherboard?
The Video Card has also been changed, at least for the moment, can someone recognize it?

It's the FSB, what really unleashes the powah with these relics is maximizing bus speed.

That board looks like an ASUS CUSL2.

Yes I have noticed that high FSB resulting in high memory speed impacts the performance more than clock speed when it comes to these platforms.

And it is an Asus CUSL2 rev 1.0 board!
The Video Card is a plain Asus Geforce 3.

Here are some performance numbers.

SuperPi 1m. First the Coppermine P3 933 @ 1100 I used to test the board.

SuperPi 1m. Here are the Tualeron 1400 @ 1736. The voltage is boosted 0.1V

Finally I am happy with both performance and stability!

I did spend some time earlier today hunting a cold boot issue.
The system would suddenly only post when it felt like it, even with default settings.
It was the old monitor cable that had a short circuit 😮. It took some time to figure out...

Not new but I had to search through the whole appartment to find some decent CAS2 PC133 memory.

3dmark 2001. I am pretty sure this is faster then a 1.6 ghz Wilmatte Pentium 4 with PC-133 SDRAM 😀.

The memory is the limiting factor.
If I clock the FSB higher than 155 mhz with CL2 the system will not complete 3Dmark 2001.
I do not like to run the memory right at the edge of stability so I dialed back the FSB 2 MHz.
With CL3 the system will run @ 166 mhz FSB/Memory with the CPU @ 1750 mhz 1.7V but it isnt faster than 155 mhz FSB with CL2.
