I've had a Creative Voodoo2 card since about 2000 but have never got it working, and it was a returned card from a computer reseller I used to work at, so I don't know if it's faulty or not. It's now time to either get it working or bin it.

The only oldish hardware I have to test this on is an EPoX 8KTA3+ motherboard with Athlon XP 2400+, ATI X800 GPU, 1GB RAM. I have tried to get it working before without success, are there any experts willing to give me a hand with this or some recommendations?

I've managed to find the motherboard manual if that helps.

The obvious question is: what did you try, and what results did you achieve that led you to believe that it wasn't working?

I'll have a play tonight and get some specifics. I installed the card and then the FastVoodoo2 drivers, and then I can't remember 😒 I think I tried some 3dfx demo's and they wouldn't run.
Is Windows 98 the best OS to use for testing?

That depends on the tests you are trying to do. Windows 98 would probably be a good place to start, though my first inclination might be to try DOS if you have an appropriate DOS Glide game handy.

Windows 98/Xp - OS must find the Voodoo as a new PCI device.
Use official drivers.
Display/Properties/Advanced - you must get the "3dfx V2-1000" tab.
Use this as the test tool.

Asus P4P800 SE/Pentium4 3.2E/2 Gb DDR400B,
Radeon HD3850 Agp (Sapphire), Catalyst 14.4 (XpProSp3).
Voodoo2 12 MB SLI, Win2k drivers 1.02.00 (XpProSp3).

I installed the card at lunch time, and when I got home after work the monitor has stopped working. So not sure when I will be able to get a replacement. Thanks for your help so far.

What I've tried so far:
USB drive with DOS and GTA installed. Copied glide2x.ovl into its own folder and set the path to include this folder. Ran GTA and chose 3DFX as the graphics option. Message comes up, "What 3dfx card?" I also tried copying the glide2x.ovl directly into the GTA\GTADOS folder, and it made no difference.

Started up Windows 98 and installed the FastVoodoo drivers, comes up with the 3dfx V2-1000 tab. Extracted those files you suggested GameCollector, and ran test1, which caused the computer to freeze.

Again - use official drivers.

eraH:
that 3dfx V2-1000 tab is there even if you don't have Voodoo installed.

To test V2 I'd install official W98 drivers and use a 3dfx benchmark tool - WizMark (get it here).

You can also check the Device manager if Voodoo2 is present in the system.

Requests are also possible... /msg kixs

Here is what I've done.
* Installed Windows 98 SE
* Installed DirectX 9
* Installed IE6
* Installed Windows 98 SE SP2
* Installed all drivers
* Installed the Voodoo2 drivers last, after a restart, Windows boots up to the desktop and then locks up.

I installed the Athlon compatible driver and was able to boot to the desktop without freezing. I then ran WizMark and it completed. I ran demo0 from the diagnostic kit and my computer froze again.

Still no luck, I installed G-Police. It works if I use the X800, but if I choose the Voodoo then it just freezes the computer. Same with NFS2SE, software mode is alright, as soon as I try the 3dfx exe the computer freezes.

Err. Maybe the reason is this - 1 GB RAM.
Edit system.ini and set MaxPhysPage=1FFFF or MaxPhysPage=20000.

Well, my IMHO is - you have killed Win98 memory manager by this SP2.

Fresh install of Windows 98 SE
Updated system.ini with MaxPhysPage=1FFFF
Installed DirectX 9c
Installed motherboard drivers
Installed ATI X800 drivers
Installed Athlon compatible Voodoo 2 drivers.
G-Police still freezes, as well as NFS2SE.

Ah. I missed the 1 GB thing as well.

I can't say I have total knowledge of the nature of Win98 memory limitations, and opinions seem to vary widely, but I think the second most reliable way to deal with them is to use HIMEMX in your CONFIG.SYS to limit the memory to something suitably below 512 MB.

The most reliable way is of course to just physically remove RAM until you have less than 512 MB.

Unfortunately I only have two 512mb DIMMS. I did try pulling one of them out to see if that made a difference but it didn't.

Also tried to use DirectX7a instead of DX9 but still had the same problem.

By the way - try detect.exe and pcirw.exe (\detect\win95 subdirectory of glide2x diagnostics kit). Are they detect your's Voodoo2?
