Hardware:
Pentium Overdrive 83@100mhz
ASUS VL/I-486SV2GX4 Rev. 2.0
32MB RAM (FPM)
1024kb L2 cache
Samsung IDE harddrive

ET4000/W32P 1MB
3DBench2: 95,8
PCPBench: 28 FPS
Doom: 1327 realticks
Quake: 23,6 FPS

ET4000/W32P 2MB
3DBench2: 95,8
PCPBench: 28 FPS
Doom: 1316 realticks
Quake: 23,6 FPS

Hi,
I (finally) did the same kind of test, but don't reach exactly the same conclusion.

Hardware:
IntelDX4@100mhz WT
Shuttle HOT419 DZ/R2
32MB RAM (FPM)
256kb L2 cache
Tekram DC680-T controlled HDD

ET4000/W32P 1MB 45ns
3DBench2: 70.5
PCPBench: 18.4
Doom: 41.59
Quake: 10.1

ET4000/W32P 2MB 60ns
3DBench2: 71.6
PCPBench: 18.4
Doom: 41.91
Quake: 10.1

There is more difference. Not that it is visible to the naked eye, but definitely more.
Maybe I should try my 60ns ET4k with only 1MB to see if the difference comes from the card and not the VRAM ?

Actually your results just prove my conclusion even more. I was out to get the myth that memory interleaving on the ET4000/W32P was a major performance boost. I won't call 0,4 (less than 1%) extra FPS in Doom a huge performance boost. My W32P use 45NS memory in both tests btw.

That's certainly not major, but in 3DBench it's not null 😉

Does testing Doom at low details and smallest window size change the results?

Just wanted to say thanks Artex for the scan of the Asus VL/I-486SV2GX4 manual, I've been looking for the real thing for a couple of years and your soft copy is probably as close as I'll get.

Using the information in this thread I've managed to get my Asus VL/I-486SV2GX4 rev 2.1 board humming along with a Am586 PR75 in write back mode, yay. I can't quite reproduce your benchmark results because of the VGA cards I have at my disposal (my Ark Logic comes closest), but it's still an awesome 486.

I've noticed that - despite the board being jumpered for the PR75 - that a 486DX 33 will be detected correctly and seemingly work as expected. This might come in is handy for speed sensitive games like Ultima 7, etc.

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

Try to test it in Windows with Winbench 3.11 and Wintach.

Requests are also possible... /msg kixs

From what I've read of old Windows benchmarks from PC Magazine the S3 should be faster in Windows as it was marketed towards the desktop crowd more than the gamer. The ET4000 was more a cheap man solution with good VGA performance and OK Windows performance.

But ofc I can bench when I get the possibility.

could you do this for the AMD 5x86 and Cyrix 5x86 stickers, there pretty cool and I think I'd like to use them on a few machines as well.

i thought i read that the bios is not flashable in the gx4?

Nope, I don't believe so. The board worked just fine with the PS2 mouse prior to the upgraded bios.
