Hi all,

I've built a small PC to use purely as a media player and network storage machine, it is based on this case:http://www.amazon.co.uk/Powercool-T01B-Deskto … y/dp/B008XI7F6I
I'm using an ASROCK 775i65G rev 2.0 http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/775i65G%20R2.0/?cat=CPU
I've a choice of 3 CPU's I can use with this build, Pentium 4 641 3.2gig Cedar Mill(SL9KF) this will speedstep between 2.4/3.2 (12/16 multiplier) & 1.16/1.26 volts.It is a 65w part D0 core revision, the best P4 I am aware of for cool and efficient running.
I have been using this CPU for a few days and it works fine, no overheating and ample speed for my needs, however I have now updated the BIOS to the latest version and am able to use any Core 775 CPU. On hand I have a Celeron Dual Core E1400 & Pentium Dual core E2220, anyone think these will be cooler running than the cedar mill ?intel rates them all at 65w.

They will probably run around the same; I'd probably go with the E2220 of the trio though, as it will likely give you the best performance of the three for multimedia tasks (either of the dual-cores would be an improvement over the Pentium 4, but the E2220 should be faster than the E1400).

The E2220 outscores the Celeron E1600 and Pentium XE 965 (which are both superior to the Celeron E1400 and Pentium 4 641; respectively).

Well I finally got around to experimentation with different CPU's in this machine.
Results were somewhat unexpected.
Pentium Dual core E2220 (2.4 Ghz, 800fsb, 1meg cache)ran very hot, idling @ 45c or so, 60c+ under load.
Core 2 Duo E4300(1.80Ghz, 800fsb, 2 meg cache), hotter still.
Celeron E1400(2.0ghz, 800fsb, 512k cache) idling @ 32c, 42c under full load.

I'm guessing that this is due to refined core stepping revisions? I just can't imagine the extra cache can produce that much extra heat.
I'm pleasantly surprised the cedar mill 641 D0 stepping, is the coolest running of the lot though, a fast and cool netburst CPU does exist! 😀

Idling at 45C isn't a problem though. Some people talk about these kinds of CPU temp as though they're insanely high, but they aren't a problem at all.

WinXP : PIII 1.4GHz, 512MB RAM, 73GB SCSI HDD, Matrox Parhelia, SB Audigy 2.
Win98se : K6-3+ 500MHz, 256MB RAM, 80GB HDD, Matrox Millennium G400 MAX, Voodoo 2, SW1000XG.
DOS6.22 : Intel DX4, 64MB RAM, 1.6GB HDD, Diamond Stealth64 DRAM, GUS 1MB, SB16.

Agreed. My Core 2 Quad and Pentium 4 both run around there - the Pentium 4 has been doing this for close to 15 years with no problems. 😎

Out of curiosity, since you mention the Pentium 4 being the coolest running - is it enabling power saving features that the other chips (or the board) aren't compatible with (or that aren't being enabled properly)?

the reported temp is not really accurate, as it involves the cpu's integrated thermal sensor. instead, just feel the heatsink after its been under full load(usually linx or prime95) for 10 minutes.
i only care about temp at full load, and under 60C is considered safe(but as i said, reported temp is not really accurate). i believe that the e1400 surely generates least heat.

since your p4 has been running for almost 15 years, i can assume that its a willamette core that doesn't clock over 2ghz, and is under 60 watts. 😎

Willamette 2.0GHz, 71.8W TDP. Here: http://ark.intel.com/products/27432/Intel-Pen … rocessor%202.00 it was brand-new in 2001, and I've never really tried overclocking it, so I don't know how much beyond 2GHz it may go (the board it's in doesn't support much in the way of overclocking either).

Thanks for the replies, I realise that none of the chips are running too hot, but in this tiny little case with nearly no airflow, lower the better, the only exhaust is through the tiny little PSU which i prefer not to cook too badly 😀 I used to run a VIA C7-D 1.5ghz in this case, always ran cool as cucumber but was glacially slow hence the 775 board being fitted for more oommph.

If you're coming from a C7-D, anything that's been mentioned in this thread (including my ancient Pentium 4) would be a pretty massive upgrade. 🤣 If the Cedar Mill is working along happily, I'd say that's good enough. 😀
