I have only seen it whereby you can use DB9 RS-232 and RS-485 serial devices on a USB port, not the other way around. If you have a link to someone who has made a converter that lets you use USB mice on a computer's RS-232 serial port, I would be interested.

Only posted a link to that db9-usb-m converter-kit, early in this thead. 😀
Took me a week to find. Not good at gogling by the way.

Here is a link for the youtube video I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PosPLX8Qw08

Shure we need drivers now, yet, wich and how?

I think this is the best shot at getting stuff working in dos, at the moment.
Unless we do some programming on one of those arduino serial/usb converter modules.
And I am not good at programming at all. 🙁

As mentioned earlier, that usb-rs232 adapter won't work. It's a USB DEVICE, you'd need a USB HOST. It's not meant to go on the motherboard side but on the external peripheral (modem, graphic tablet, printer, etc.) side and hook up to a USB-equipped computer.

Damn.... That was not what they made clear in the video.
Looking at the manual, it is stated somewere deep (and written were I did not notice it), that host is needed.
I give in. Damn.

^ at those prices, might as well look out for a bunch of DIN keyboards and serial mice sold cheap as "lot" deals etc.

If you don't mind your mouse skipping around a bit with some lag, go ahead with the vetra systems converter. Also keep in mind that they have 3 such converters. All convert PS/2 signals to RS-232 signals and each unit requires a very specific mouse driver that you will need to hunt down. The driver is not supplied with the unit.

If I manage to track down a driver that works, would they still do the trick using dos only?

Serial mice are extremely common and cheap so this whole exercise appears very excessive (IMO). 😀 You can go USB to PS/2 to DIN.

I hate "oldskool" serial mice and I love using state of the art wireless USB mice which support PS/2 protocol.
How is this possible? Using CTMouse and the serial-ps2 converter from ish-gmbh (item no. 00004942

I have the Raritan converter and I have no issues with it personally, ive used it in resolutions up to 1024x768 no problem, a few years ago 2 of them on American ebay for about $30 I bought one because I wasn't sure if it was going to work as I wanted it to, someone else bought the other one should have bought both in hindsight.

Between the Raritan, Vetra and KVM-based converters, I personally found the Raritan to perform the worst. I wonder if the types of PS/2 mice tested has something to do with it. My test mouse was a Logitech MouseMan (trackball). My screen resolution was 1280x1024 in Windows NT 4.0. I do recall reducing the resolution, but still found some lag and jumpiness, which decreased with decreasing resolution. I am accustomed to using a PS/2 mouse over a serial mouse, so my judgement might be somewhat spoiled in this regard.

dirkmirk, would you be willing to test your Raritan on a system which has both a PS/2 mouse input and a serial input using a screen resolution of 1280x1024? Test the mouse on the PS/2 port then compare it directly on the serial port. For me, even at 1024x768, the mouse had so much lag I found it difficult to navigate through the Start Menu programs. I do recall adjusting the baud rate and other various settings but to no avail.
