Going through a lot of SIMM memory sticks. I'm trying to set my EDO RAMs apart and have a special pool that can handle 83MHz with tightest timing in a TX board (Acorp 5TX29 in this case, because it's a late one with a wide selection of FSB, voltage and multiplier options, and available in working condition - I even have a spare of it now. I find it pretty good despite being a low cost brand).

I tried the same with FPM modules but I gave up quickly as none of them seemed stable, even the best pair froze the computer while running Goldmemory. Not a big deal though, I don't think I'll ever need FPM memory for a system with 83MHz FSB. Even 66MHz is almost overkill for them as I mostly use these in 486s. But maybe one day I'll get some very early Pentium with FPM support only...

Shame on us, doomed from the start

Recapped two SS7 motherboards - Acorp 5VIA77 and SYE/Lucky Tech P5MVP3. Former POSTs okay, latter won't POST but CPU heats up normally. No beeps either.

Very nice; reminds me of my RH5/6 and wmaker days 😀

Finally re-capped an MSI MS-6340 (Via KM133 chipset, from a Packard Bell iConnect). After working on 1990-era leaded solder, it's a shock how hard (in every sense of the word) the RoHS stuff is again. But that's just a temporary irritation. Now it's sporting flashy new Nichicon, Rubycon and United Chemicon caps. Haven't had time to test it yet.

This model (MS-6340) is notoriously known for its faulty VRM PWM controller SC1155 (becomes very hot and usually there is no CPU voltage, but sometimes CPU voltage is too high). So watch out, first try without CPU or with partly faulty testing CPU and do measure CPU voltage.

Got my ATI Radeon 9600XT card to work correctly for Windows 98SE after disabling a few things and changing the AGP Aperture size from 64MB to 16MB, but, my VooDoo2 card isn't responding to playing a certain game (will test a few others to see what happens). Glad I got the card to work after a recap. And for a card that was $4.99, I'm very happy at the results.

Finished my third PC build this holidays ... this one the Voodoo5/A3D2 build.

- voodoo5 5500 AGP
- diamond monster sound 2 with SPDIF bracket
- asus a7v333
- athlon XP 3000+
- 512MB ddr333
- 500gb seagate hdd via ide/sata adapter and in a hot swap bay

I have to say...performance at 1280x1024 is amazing in games like UT and Q3A. Latest Beta drivers were crap however and I had to revert to the latest stable. Now to try out Thief, HL1 and Diablo2.

Next build...s370 and the via C3.

Got my athalon 700 rig out to finally troubleshoot it. Turns out the bastec 250w wasn't any good. Put in an Allied 300w and it's Rock solid now

🤣 I grabbed, out of a pile of discarded PSUs, a Codegen unit because the name ran a bell, even though it's a lightweight.

Finally tested it, it has the elusive -5V line. So as long as it doesn't blow up, it has a use indeed!

Also got a gargantuan Kingspao AT PSU someone had already got into and messed with the fan, I suspect it's an XT-style PSU but I haven't cross-reference it yet. BRS on the side. I really need to rig up an AT tester, I'm developing a pile.

Tested another bad socket 939 board. 🙁 Not 100% sure it's the board instead of the CPU, but I'm tired.

Edit: Oh and tested a KEC 14" VGA monitor that works great, came with the 286 I got recently.

*Too* *many* *things*!

Codegen PSUs are infamous PC killers. I also have some bad memories with them.
I wouldn't recommend them even for short term use or testing purposes.
Just solder out the Molex and FDD power cables so you can use it in more modern and reliable PSUs replacing the SATA power cables.
It's not hard to find quality OEM PC or workstation PSUs in the 200-350W range which is perfect for P2-P4 builds

Added two drops of oil on the sleeve bearing of my too loud AT power supply fan. Cleaned it aswell. Long live the sound of silence 😀

Installed a backplate on my K6-2 system, thanks to liqmat for being so generous with this part. I thought this PC would never have a backplate, but it actually does now..

With patience, time and a great community like Vogons, anything is possible I guess!

Nice one! Those are the sorts of details that keep me awake at night.

These can be found relatively easy, as many motherboards used this I/O layout. I have two of these motherboards, Asus P/I-XP55T2P4 and Intel Advanced/ML (Marl). One valid part# for this type of I/O shield is 32140544A (just in case anybody else is looking for one...).

END OF LINE.

Yes, but he got three for free. That's a price you can't beat.

Yep. Looks like this is the 'no voltage' option. VCore is 0V, SC1155 is hot as hell 😒

Too bad, this would have been a great gift for an old friend.

Thanks.
Oddly every time I compile wine it doesn't make the 32bit launcher. So Im useing a precompiled install.

Today I installed a radiator, HDDs and fans into a case for my p4 isa build.

No sir I don't like it!
