from here http://www.falconfly.de/directx.htm i see the latest directx version compatible with win 98 se is - 22 Jul 2004 : DirectX 9.0c - should i install this?

Didn't know there is DX9 for W98, but yes, it should work fine 😀

For my Voodoo 2 systems I always go with DX7. But there is no particular reason for this. It never gave me issues so just keep using it 😀

What I do is I have a 8GB USB flash drive with all the drivers. Organised by vendor (like 3dfx) and product (V1, V2, V3). The W98SE USB storage driver fits on a floppy, so I install that right after installing Windows, then load the chipset drivers, video drivers and so on.

Yes, for that config best to stay with nothing newer than DX7. That's very close to my own ASUS P2B rig btw. 😀

Also 440BX motherboards can be quite a flexible platform, they can go up to 1GHz+, or down to 133MHz with certain unlocked P2s.

Old boards can be picky about what RAM sticks the accept.

The two 128 sticks, are they identical?

I stick with DX 8.1 unless its a really really old card, even then its not usually an issue, with anything but DX2 ddraw stuff, which is rather rare.
I usually use DX 8.1 because the install is smaller, but I do use DX 9.0b or 9.0c if its an Geforce FX card on 98\ME, doesn't matter much with very few DX9 programs anyway that work properly or run fast enough in 98se\ME. With the limited DX9 cards to choose from that work properly in 9x.

V2's don't have a problem with either really with the last official 3dfx driver sets.
I never use the 3rd party community made sets with them.

Sometimes these boards have issues with PC133 memory. Did you update the BIOS to the latest version, maybe it fixes memory compatibility.

I'd try an Athlon 1.33GHz
probably a VIA-VT82C686B chipset, because it supports AGP 4x and DDR
or, if you're not going to do late 90's 3D I would go with a 440BX or 430TX.

Are there chips on the back?
Do you get 128mb on each stick when its just 1 stick used?

But I would guess probably the mobo, just doesn't like that particular double sided high density module.

the only difference that i can see is on the 2 infineon stick that the system recognize half of the total is write 256mb 32x64 pc133 cl2 and 128mb 16mx64, 133mhz cl3

in the hynix working one is not write

Sounds like mobo~RAM compatibility issue. Have you tried the Infineon modules on your ASUS P2B-F?

I honestly don't get why people make this sound more complicated than it is. Not long ago I built a comp much like what the OP is asking for and so far have had no real issues.

I really need to make a follow-up video though, because it's not as simple as building the machine... the right software is needed too.

Windows 98: 512 MB max AFAIK. Try just 1 or two sticks.
