Well....
Originally I sat up my K6-III (FIC PA2013) system for dos gaming, and just for the fun of it I installed an empty harddrive and installed Win98 on it. The result was pretty horrible, as gaming was really laggy and buggy in games such as Unreal Tournament.

Spec's:
FIC PA-2013, K6-III-400
198 megabyte memory.
Asus V3800 TNT2 32 mb AGP.
SB-LIVE.

I did install all the correct drivers, that I have found on the official manufatures website's.
What pussles me now, is what could have been the source of the unstable gaming performance?
Is it the AGP drivers? Is it the fact that I have a GUS ISA card (ISA slowing something down)?
Could it be a "wrong" gfx card that I am trying to play games with?

I went back to DOS on this system, as I have a different rig' for 98 gaming.
It just keep's going through my mind, if I should try it again, just using a different GFX card,
such as a Matrox or nVidia cards. Perhaps Matrox G400? Or getting an Gforce-4?

I know there is a DOS GFX Matrix chart or called something else.
Perhaps there is a version of that list for Win98?

apart from UT which games did you run on it?

the K6 CPUs were not the greatest for 3D games, particularly later ones, I had a K6-450 , and in general I would say its 3D performance (without any 3DNow) was around the level of a 266Mhz PII . So a game like UT99 is going to be a bit laggy, especially with the TNT2 (the game was best on the Voodoo cards due to the glide optimization).

2D performance on games like Tiberian Sun or Zeus was fine, but later 3D games were a non starter.

Ohhh....
That is why my "late 90's K6-II-500" were really slow in games back then. 🤣
Back then, I had the same GFX card, only with 16 megabyte and from Creative.

Anyway.
I tried the following games: NFS Porche 2000, Unreal Tournament and Return to castle wolfenstein.
All running seriously slow.
If I am not able to get my hands on any V2 card, what would then be a fine replacement for TNT2?

These games are too new IMO.

The K6-III is great at bridging the gap between late DOS games and early 3D games like Shadow of the Empire, Monster Madness, Incoming, Turok, Forsaken, G-Police. Here it has plenty of performance!

Quake II and Unreal also run quite well on it.

Also Windows 95 is lighter on slower machines. It does make a difference.

What was your storage situation? Did you have DMA enabled? What hard drive?

TNT2 cards are not the greatest cards for super socket 7 systems. Both Ali and Via chipset drivers CAN be buggy with these cards so it can be a driver/compatibility problem.

In my experience it gets much better with the latest chipset drivers and geforce 2 cards or newer.

Super socket 7 boards and k6 cpu`s work best with voodoo cards. Best alternative for the voodoo2 is the voodoo3. This agp card works perfectly in most boards and the Voodoo3 usually is much cheaper than the voodoo2.

asus tx97-e, 233mmx, voodoo1, s3 virge ,sb16
asus p5a, k6-3+ @ 550mhz, voodoo2 12mb sli, gf2 gts, awe32
asus p3b-f, p3-700, voodoo3 3500TV agp, awe64
asus tusl2-c, p3-S 1,4ghz, voodoo5 5500, live!
asus a7n8x DL, barton cpu, 6800ultra, Voodoo3 pci, audigy1

I have a Seagate Baracuda 40 gigabyte harddrive installed in the machine. I used the same type of harddrive for Win98 installation.
The choice was made, because this drive can be used for both Fat16 and Fat32, without modding it to a 32 gigabyte drive using Seatools.
DMA is all enabled in Win98 and BIOS, checked it, as this was the first I susspected.

Anyway...
Can not believe that UT would require more, even under 640x480. Checked the net for minimum requirements.

Hmm I haven't tried the V3 in SS7 boards yet. Just V2.

The main difference I found with the V3 is better image quality, access to higher resolutions, no SLI artefacts, cheaper, simpler 1 card solution, full OpenGL, nicer driver interface (IMO). It runs hot though, highly recommend a 120mm fan blowing over it.

Someone here on the forum, toasted his AGP slot on the exact same board, when he installed a V3-AGP.

developers tended to be pretty ....liberal when it came to system requirements, often meeting the minimum requirements meant the game would run , they don't mention how well though 😜

UT99 should run a bit better if you get a Voodoo card like a V3 2000 though , its glide optimized

V3 is a no-go on my FIC-PA2013..... 🤣
Might have another go, using GF4 or 2.

Good luck.
I wouldn't risk it, as you know I already lost one board, to its AGP voltage issue.
The other has been pretty happy with a FX 5500-PCI and a V2.
I suggest that 🤣 .

I wonder if a Voodoo4 would work , but the problem with that is the rarity, its not the cheapest.

Geforce2 is not bad, as is something like a Geforce4MX . Though you also have to ask are you building the PC to play specific games, or tailoring the games to the PC?.

By that I mean , if you want to play RTCW for instance, it might be worth changing the entire config of the system.

Have a Voodoo1 card. It is inside my Celeron 266/66 slot one system. (HP Vectra VE)
Voodoo cards are way too expensive, if you ask me, only use them if you get them cheap if I should say.
Got mine for free, and that is cheap enough for the card to be used. 😉

Actually....
Today, there are two V1 cards for sale here in Denmark, online on a Danish Ebay-like site.
The first is a Orchid, priced at what is equivelant to 5.39 us dollars.
The other is a Innovision 3DX5000, prices at the equivelant of 13.47 us dollars.
Don't know.... Cheap it is, and I have one already.

So what was the actual issue? The V3 needs the higher voltage, so what happened?

Looks like V2 for SS7 and V3 for slot 1 is the way to go. V4 is a bit hit and miss. Sometimes, slower, sometimes on par, sometimes faster than V3. Only V5 is clearly faster.

Also the V3 is the only one that has perfectly centred VGA image when I capture with my AVerMedia. V1, 2, 4 and 5 the image is shifted a bit. The V4 and 5 shift noticeably at 1600 x 1200. Throws off my LCD auto mode and I need to position it manually but even at the extreme left setting a part of the image is missing.

In general when I look at the image position of Voodoo cards, it's a mess 😀

Yeahh..... V1 and V2 is good. Yet, the more I read, the more I realise that nVidia is a way better choice.
I have a feeling, that V3 to V5 is only the name you buy. Way better alternatives after V2 cards.
Even my Asus Radeon 9600 AGP, gives better image quality on games such as Carmageddon2.

Sooo.... Is Voodoo worth the price? No freaking way. Not at that price it keeps up online... (Ebay and such)

I'd grab those V1's at those prices.
PCI-Geforce FX 5500\5200 is about equal in performance to a Geforce 2 gts\ Geforce 256 DDR.
More power then the K6 can use fully really.

As for my Fic board, I'm guessing its some sort of design defect with the board.
V3 drawing to much blew a pin sized hole in one of the IC chips behind the AGP slot.
Board refuses to turn back on. Its in storage now, I had 2 so its no biggy and was still able to assemble that system. Did over pay for them tho 🙁 .

Yeah.... Looting and burning down the town hall.... 🤣
Just at the price-tag, nVidia gives more. When we are speaking of old GFX-Cards.
