The Dreamblaster X1 sounds really nice, at least from what I can hear with these crappy laptop speakers. With luck Youtube dosnt remove the clips before I get the chance to listen to them using real speakers.

dreamblaster , I read that the onboard flash is 32MB and currently 8MB are being used... any plans to use the rest? maybe adding more samples? or is this impossible and the flash chip happens to be 32mb because it was more easy to source?

Yes, the 32 mbyte can be used.
The 8mbyte soundbank is the highest size general midi set provided by dream for this chip --> this is cleanwave64.
I tested using the cleanwave64 general midi bank + 8mbyte for high end piano sound (patch nr 0 and 1), that is 16 mbyte in total, it sounds good.
It is hard to make my own soundbanks, especially a full general midi soundbank. I think I could add some more sounds over time,
maybe some specialty sounds like a bass sound set.

I think the 8MB soundbank is fine as it is.
But if it was possible for the user to load his own soundbanks using more memory that would be just great 😀
If the tools used for making soundbanks are available to the public that is.

I see, thanks for the explanation 😀
one last question, have you integrated some way to access the flash and read/write it ? maybe a pin header so one can update with a cheap usb spi flasher or something?

Unfortunately, it is not possible now to develop soundbanks for this chip unless you have the sound development hardware and software from dream.
I bought the sound development kit : http://www.dream.fr/pdf/Serie2000/Short_Forms … 0-SDK_short.pdf and also the compiler/development kit (under NDA!) for this specific chip.
It is a nice toolkit, but it is not really public or low cost.

The flash is parallel NOR flash, not SPI flash.
Updating could be possible with a MIDI bootloader (but I would need to add a midi out, and still it would be slow) or maybe an option simple serial programmer (may be somewhat faster).
But as explained above, you cannot edit the soundbanks yourselves at the moment. You would only be able to upload new binaries (soundbanks or firmware) which I compile for you.

As long as the soundbank provided by Dream is good 8MB should be enough. It should sound alot better than my old Dream module with 2MB from the mid 90s.

I look forward to hearing more samples, I might be a future customer as I do need another nice GM module.

@dreamblaster

I see, thanks for the info on this. Interesting to see the SDK , it sure looks expensive...

IMHO it never hurts to ask or be prepared for future developments, a couple of years back noone expected new stuff to be released... now we have ARGUS, the X1, the SSI2001 card, isaopl2 and who knows what will come next 😀

Is it correct that the soundbank is
the GMBK9764 bank? http://www.dream.fr/pdf/Serie2000/Soundbanks/GMBK9764.pdf
Seems like the normal Crystal32 bank with some new instruments as marked in the pdf file.

I have to say: great work, now this seems to be a great new wavetable board.
