Howdy all, I just wanted to let you guys see this HUGE "new" computer I just picked up for free! I'm really excited about it, mainly because of the aesthetics but also because it's some more vintage hardware to fiddle around with. 😜

So here are the two video's! Hope you enjoy!

Part one : Visual Inspection and cleaning with commentary.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWnGGUArmBw&l … K0T584V_YaePLGA

Part two: Booting the machine up and discussing hardware issues, shortcomings and playing some games.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89GTdyy0UCg&l … K0T584V_YaePLGA

Also I would like to apologize ahead of time for the few parts that are out of focus, my camera is not the greatest about that.

Cool! I love IBM!

BTW: no need to curse!

I know, I have a hard time catching myself. It's simply one of those bad habits that just wont go away. 🤣
I apologize for any profanity that may have slipped out.

Cursing is alright (when it's fun at least). Misspelling in the title, OTOH, drives my mind crazy! 😠 😈

BTW: no need to curse!

What cursing?

But regardless. Sensitive much? There are places on the internet that are purely profane and vulgar. An occasional swear word here and there is no big deal.

Nice find. I honestly didn't know IBM made P2 machines.
Acbel Polytech (the PSU) is the maker of Coolermaster's new low end supplies. I don't know about them at the time but atleast now
they have a reputation of not being the best quality.

Also what is wrong with Seagate?

Great videos!

They are a real pain to open

Mine is easy to open and a real pain to close 😁

I'm not sure what this is in here

This slot is for video memory expansion

You don't see any sound chips

That's because the sound is not soldered. There are solder points for it however, because your PC shares motherboard design with PC-300PL Type 6862 with onboard sound (Crystal 4237, nothing special) and Intel pro100 LAN. It also has AGP port btw. The Crystal chip would be mounted closer to the riser board and the pro100 chip would be mounted near the video, if it was the PL.

@ Racoonrider Yeah I said it backwards, I meant it's a pain to close. 🤣 So it would seem mine should have had some sort of OEM sound card since it lacks on board sound. I did notice afterwards that there were the solder points but failed to mention it. 😜

@Monster Ahhh! Thank you! I knew I misspelled it but somehow couldn't find the correct way. 🤣 I'm correcting the titles right now.

@smeezkitty Thanks for the info on the PSU! 😁 Also there really isn't anything wrong with seagate, I mean they got a reputation in the 2000's of not being all that reliable but they are certainly better than Quantum and Maxtor. Ideally I like to use Western Digital. 😜

I don't think there was one in stock, but I'm not sure. I uploaded some documents/manuals on PC-300 to vintage driver library not long ago. The IBM website deleted all the links, yet I managed to get some good stuff from there.

nice, quite similar to what Im planning for my next build.

Oh so what your saying is this was marketed as a cut down business machine? Interesting.
Thanks for the manuals! Those will come in handy. 😁

Yes, most probably 😀 You are welcome, promise me to have a lot of fun with your new computer! Manuals are more useful as something to read about the gear you own, the whole setup thing is, as I'm sure you've already seen, quite intuitive 😀

Just for reference, the thread about my 300PL: IBM PC-300PL - Diamond powered!

🤣 Oh yeah this thing is my new favorite. It's just so cool. 😁

Also yeah basically if you know how to work on any computer you basically know what to look for on all the rest. 😀

Btw nice monitor! Is the keyboard original too? (I just realized I have an old IBM PS/2 connector keyboard! 😳 )

Here is the keyboard I have:

Nah, the keyboard is my old-time favorite Mitsumi Classic 😀 Is your keyboard the famous Model M? I always wanted to see one live 😀

No unfortunately mine is from 1996 so it could be the correct one for this system, I found it last month at a thrift store and even though I knew it was rubber dome I grabbed it anyhow. 🤣 I guess the computer gods are smiling on me. 😜

Here is the back of it showing all information.

Model M keyboards are somewhat common on Craigslist and eBay. I even have one lying around that I never use. I do not like the clicking. For me the Philips P2814 keyboard is the best.

Yeah one of these days I'll buy a model M but I really don't feel like paying 50+ dollars for a keyboard, I usually pick up my keyboards for 2$ a piece.

I had a couple of IBM's like that, sold them tho, as they got to be annoying.
They liked to turn themselves on.... After they completely lose power, and then power gets restored.
No option in the bios to stop it, on the 2 I had, they were slot 1 PII's and bx boards if I remember.
Since we suffer brownouts\blackouts here often in the summer, I would often come home to find that they had turned themselves on, after such an event.
In retrospect, I coulda replaced the PSU on them with one, that actually had a mechanical switch to turn them off 🤣.
Oh well they were almost free machines, and not retro class when I sold them off, so restoring them wasn't my priority then.
