specs.

Intel Pentium 3 500mhz

300+ megabyte of memory

gigabyte ga-bx2000

nvidia fx 5500 agp

fireball harddrive

windows 98

and nic is intel 100+pro pci card.

lan speed is slow

I have a 100mb internet connect that my main pc can hit with no problem

but this older computer cant even hit 7mb

and teamviewer file transfers between my main machine and this machine max at 1mb

computer is mainly just for older games that refuse to run proper on my main machine.

could the intel nic be bad or is it running slow due to the machines specs?

It's probably Windows 98 at fault. You can improve TCP/IP performance a good bit with TCPOptimizer but Win9x just has inefficient networking with obsolete protocol implementations. CPU also plays a role and that 500MHz P3 is going to bottleneck some things.

TCPOptimizer is useful with 2K and XP as well with modern internet bandwidth.

I would recommend a PRO 100 S, as its just an all around better card, plus does encryption offloading. They're easy to find and can be had for next to nothing.

Pro 100 (82558 or 82559 chipset) were one of my favourite cards,
You want the Intel download drivers, there are a few performance settings to tinker with.

The slider setting defaults to "max network performance", but that also means a high interrupt rate - moving the slider a few click to the right may improve performance by lowering interrupt load.
