Wow, it's a Slot 1 machine... nice! I always thought these were socket 370 ...

Both. I have one big desktop (no riser, cards go directly to MOBO) with S370 Celeron 733. 20 years ago I owned classic Compaq Deskpro (big slim desktop with PCI and ISA slots in riser and "low profile" onboard AGP) with Slot1 P2/266. And I also have two mini desktops - this one (P2/350 in Slot1) and one with S370 P3/800.

This very Compaq SFF was a machine we used for a number of years at work, until they were overthrown 😀 by their bigger HP cousins (and they sat in big piles around the office until scapped 🙁 ). Good luck finding that cable - seems it only existed as part of a complete kit (314215-001) and has been an expensive rarity for years.

I saw a Core I3 all-in-one on the curb, but could not find a reason to pick it up . Thankfully, somebody else apparently did .

The only use I could have imagined for it was as dedicated DOSBOX machine, which I personally do not need (I have enough much faster Desktops and laptops as it is) .

EDIT : Not to mention that if fairly recent and nice looking machine like that finds its way to the curb it probably has issues .

Another tiny compact in for my collection 😀 Just fond this little beauty (well it was not a beauty when I found it - coffe was spilled into/over it many years ago and it needed lot of cleaning) at local scrapper's yard. I love it's design. Just a few clicks and whole computer is disassembled. Well, not just a few if some halfwit spilled oversugared coffe into case which sticks chassis with MOBO drawer together... And it has ESS1868 onboard! I think I won't put any cards into it, only some RAM for onboard ATI.

What bothers me is missing CD-ROM cable. As you can see, it has some proprietary connector on board and that slim drive is classic notebook one with add-on with the same 50-some pin connector. I have no idea where to find suitable cable.

Maybe just swap out the drive... or I bet if you take those 2 screws out, that little back cover comes off and the weird proprietary adapter comes off as well and then drive may actually use the standard style connector underneath.. such as this adapter:

Nice, maybe I'll buy that adapter, thanks! Or maybe I'll use PCI SATA controller and modern slim drive and SSD 😳
I know, I know 😉

Trayload G3 iMacs also used a 50 pin cable for CD, part number 922-3594. Perhaps this will be easier to find.
PS: I've never seen one of those, so I don't know if it's a regular straight cable or if if has twists or other weird things.

You can also find 50p 2.0 mm pitch ready made cables from china on eBay. Hopefully Compaq hasn't done Compaq things and it will work with a regular cable.

Both the above are good options, Alternatively just use a standard CD drive plugged into the IDE cable during initial setup with the top off.
Once you have networking up and running you probably wont miss having a working CD drive anyway.

The Compaq Deskpro SFF are really nice machines. I used them as a Linux fileserver and internet gateway at home for many years.
First the Socket 7 edition without optical drive, later the slot 1 with CD.

I have a Socket 370 one and I love it. Mine has a weird issue with the onboard IDE controller though, if I use both channels it eventually crashes, so I have my HDD hooked up to a PCI IDE controller and the CD-ROM runs from the onboard primary channel. It's a P3-1000 and I added a YMF744 sound card along with a Radeon 7000 - it is a glorious machine.

I have same cards in my SFF with S370 P3-800 😀

Obviously you have a good taste 😉

For the IDE issues, it's possible the integrated controller card might be acting funny and doing a reflow might help, but I digress. My current and only Socket 370 build has a PIII-S 1.4/512K/1.45V CPU installed and has 2 ISA slots. Going to install my AWE64 Gold for DOS games and disable the Live! 5.1 DOS compatible driverset. And possibly upgrade the RAM to 768MB.

I don't trust myself with doing a reflow with that. To be honest I am not sure which IC the onboard IDE controller on that board is. It's an i815 chipset motherboard, shouldn't that be integrated to the southbridge? I don't see how the flow on that could have failed and I don't really have the equipment to reflow a BGA chip. I think it may be as simple as some capacitors going bad, but visual inspection revealed nothing so far.

Interesting that I also have a Dell Optiplex GX110 from the same era that just started refusing to start with a yellow light of doom some day as well. I am 99% sure it's a capacitor issue for that one, either motherboard of PSU. I just never got around to taking it apart completely and checking it thoroughly. It seems these OEM boards from the late S370 era are prone to some shoddy manufacturing..

I also got 2 of those when my company got rid of them. They were originally used in the local Nokia factory and they donated them to us in 2007.
They are pretty heavy for the size and the cover is a pain to get on/off but otherwise it's a nice, quiet system.

Here similar. I got one around 2008-ish when my employer (an ISP) was decommissioning its old speedtest servers. Yes, a P2-400 Deskpro SFF with a Gb NIC in it was the official speedtest server for several hundred thousand customers for quite a few years. Of course back then internet connections were nowhere near as fast as now, I believe the fastest speed tier when it was decommissioned was around 40Mbps.

Used it as my home server/gateway for a few years until I got an Atom board to take over that role.

Shame I dumped (probably gave away, don't remember) it sometime since as it's an almost ideal compact, quiet late-period DOS system.

What motherboard are you using ?

A Shuttle AV18E2 (AV18V31) VIA Apollo Pro133T with 2 ISA slots, universal AGP slot (1x-4x), PCI slots, and integrated VIA AC'97 audio + Sound Blaster Emulation. On the Shuttle site, it says the CPU is not supported, but the board has automatic voltage detection along with the multiplier and FPS, so I decided to install it and it works without issues.

Nice board. Would have been a great option for me with the inegrated SB Pro . Just add GUS and AWE64 . Probably has a working NMI too .

Does that stand for Non-Masking Interrupt?

Yes.
For GUS (MEGAEM) and AWE32/64 (aweutil /EM) MPU-401 emulation and redirection to synth .

See AWE32 and NMI support (or lack of) on motherboard
