Not always. See these two threads:

I've never had any luck getting Archimedean Dynasty, EF2000, and MechWarrior II 3DFX to run on my V2-SLI machines. However, I've got a very nice PC with a V1 so I haven't tried very hard to do it either.

This is the chart by vetz that I linked above:

Currently I am getting more and more Games to work on my V3+V1 combo 😀, so I recommend this setup for an pre Y2k-machine.

Any idea what drivers I need in order to write CD's with the DVD-Rom installed in the system?
I tested a lot of CD-WriterSoftware (Nero, WinOnCD, ...) but no one has drivers for my DVD-Rom.

Do I need to go for an old/other CD-Rom-Drive, o is there a generic drivers-suite ?

Thx

btw. I downgraded from DX9 (Win98SE) to DX6.1

Though there are some demosscene-demos and some games that do not run anymore, but therefore some older games do not have any issues.
e.g. JazzJackRabbit runs smooth with hardwarescrolling, no mini-stutters anymore. The gameplay-feeling is like playing on console. Great!

I am also collecting some freeware-stuff that runs fine on this machine. Turrican32k and Giana32k run fine. Commando32K has some issues
on the Winport, the Dosport running in Win98se is much better, but has no sound. There is a version between the dos and the win9x port
that has sound. I am currently searching for it.

I will also test an old "dosbox-version", but I think, the machine is not fast enough for this.

Perhaps I will retest a Celeron 433 (slot) or 533 Slot-Adapater, but mostly I prefer the PII.

Argh! So many nice old Cracktro's reworked for the PC, but not for my PII-333/Win9x/Voodoo3.
They were produced on 68K/7Mhz but the PC ports need so much more Power and newer OS/DX. (P4? WinXP?)

I hoped that they will work on my PII-333, but mostly they don't. Don't know what Middleware/Emulation
is used, but the stuff that works on my machine is far away from being smooth 🙁

Argh!

I think some of that chart is wrong. On a Voodoo Rush or above, Blood E1M2 the game will crash with an error I forgot exactly what it said. But it will crash on a Rush or higher.

I currently use the Wicked-GL drivers for glquake097 and glquake113.
I am not sure which version is better for my voodoo3. glquake113 is brighter, perhaps I should use other tools for the gamma.

I use the autoexec.cfg to set the "r_wateralpha 0.4" value. But what about other Optimization?
Can I activate "anisotropic filtering in quake1 when I run the wicked-gl wrapper?

Thx

May you, please, measure results in DOSBox by Speed Test on your PII 333 (on its original clock) ? I'm trying to understand how fast the emulation may be on different CPUs.

The procedure is such:
1) Speed Test in real DOS (in win9x should say same results)
2) Speed Test inside DOSBox with its settings:
2.1) core=dynamic, scaler=none, cputype=486_slow, cycles=max; other are default
2.2) core=normal, scaler=none, cputype=486_slow, cycles=max; other are default

During the measure DOSBox window should stay active all the time, or changing window focus may reduce resources the emulator gets.

1.) Medium-Mode 1.978.261 parrots / 733.5 XT (Dos-Window under Win98se)
2.1) Medium-Mode 43.128 parrots / 16.0 XT (Dosbox 0.74 => core=dynamic, scaler=none, cputype=486_slow, cycles=max; other are default)
2.2) Medium-Mode 9.855 parrots / 3.7 XT (Dosbox 0.74 => core=normal, scaler=none, cputype=486_slow, cycles=max; other are default)

Greetings
Doc

INTERESTING SITE!
http://www.vintage3d.org/index.php

I'll do some Win9x Benchmarking. Frist I will check out if I should use dx61 or dx7 3dfx drivers. the dx-version under win98se will be dx8.

Cool 😀

Anyone who actual drives his Retro-PC with a PII and Voodoo3 here ?
What driver do you use? DX6/6.1/7 and what DX-Version?

I am not sure, but I think the DX6 driver seems better to me,
but some games require a dx7-gfx-driver, but they are mostly the
high end ones that are limited by my choice of a PII instead of a PIII.

any idea why the dx6 driver has a newer date then the dx6.1 ?

works just fine for me, no need to use older driver imho, unless you want to run GTA III... 😀

The PII-333 makes it usable for Win9x Games from 95-99 mostly games from 2000 require more cpu power.
It seems to me, that the dx6/6.1 driver runs better in the used games, but this must be proven.

Could someone please test, if the scrollers are stutterfree. On my machine they are OK, but not completly smooth.

Thx!

I did some additional testing and now I made a decision. I'll stick to DirectX 6.1a of Win98se
and the 3dfx-Reference-Drivers for it (6.1) that were on my 1999-3dfx-V3-DriverCD.

Though some Games and Demos do not work because they require DX7 and above,
but everything I have tested so far runs far better with DX-6.1/3DFX-V3-6.1.

What is needed in order to get the audio-tracks from a cd-image working with win98 ?
Currenty no Audio-CD is playing if I mount the CD-Image with Deamon-Tools.

What do I need to install in order to get Audio-CD Playback from a mounted image?

thx!

AFAIK it will only work if it uses digital audio playback (instead of just issuing the command and letting the drive itself send analog audio), and not all sound card drivers allow that.

The Basic install is the same. It works with that.
If I do a clean install with all the same drivers it does not work.
The game the image the deamon-tools, everything is the same.

there must be any software or drivers that provides audio-cd support,
but I did not found out, what software/driver does that?
