After putting a noisy BFG 6800GT OC through its paces, I'm curious about the capability of fanless video cards. Because I'm using an Athlon XP 2400+, most DX8-capable cards will be fine for gaming.

Right now I'm testing a Sapphire Radeon 9600 (non-Pro). I tested it using Catalyst 5.9 and Catalyst 6.2. I'm not really sure which Catalyst version began to recognize this card, but it is one after 4.7. I wasn't able to find another set of Windows 98 drivers after 4.7 and before 5.9.

The Radeon 9600 (Catalyst 5.9) posted a 3DMark01 score of 7943 with my KT133A system.

This score is well-below the 8933 posted by my fan-enabled GF4 Ti4600.

What are some other worthy contenders for the best, quietest DX8-capable video card?

Hmmm....
My Radeon-9600 gave lower score than the Voodoo3-3500 on a P-III-933 and using a i815-board.
That was tested, using 3D-Mark99. Great to see that a GF4 Ti4600 is that fast.
A nice tip for my next GFX purchase. Might go well on an Asrock K7S41, wich I need to recap.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....

You could make a Radeon X800 or GeForce 6800 fanless if you were motivated to do so. Install an Accelero S2 on one for example. That's for your Win9x needs. If we're talking XP, then you can go much faster. I mean a modern card is quite capable of DirectX 8.

Quadro FX 700 is basically a passively cooled, underclocked Geforce FX 5900. It is probably faster than a Radeon 9600 in DX8.
[Edit] Obviously you won't find contemporary gaming benchmark results for an FX 700. There are some postings about that card on Vogons, you could also extrapolate from FX 5900 results using GPU and memory and clocks.
