Hey!

When I was looking for a new Enermax PSU for my old/new Socket A 3200+ Build I noticed that they now have 6 pin PCIe power connectors. But I have an AGP Radeon X1950 Pro card with a 6 pin power connector. Do you know if they are compatible?

also: there are PSUs with 20/24 pin ATX connectors - I guess for the old boards I'll need the 20 pin connector - right? don't have a not-connected, not-running ATX board handy right now.

Is it generally a good idea to use new ATX PSUs with ATX 2.4 standard with old mainboards and components?

Thank you!

The biggest issue with socket A systems is that they are 5V heavy and newer PSUs usually have weak 5V rails. That is the biggest problem. Also, I wouldn't doubt those power connectors are the same (since the X1950 existed in PCIe variants), but wouldn't risk it whithout checking the pinouts.

You will struggle finding a modern PSU that is suitable for the 3200+. I've tried a FSP Hexa 500W and the 5V readings drop to around 4.3V and the 12V readings shoot up past 13V.

I found an old PSU at work with 35A on the 5V rail.

One way around this is finding a motherboard with that 4 pin 12V connector next to the socket.

The old codegen 300w PSU's deliver 30a on 5v and 13a on 12v.
I think that they would be fine if one can be found and recapped.
I did build a lot of machines in 2005 using Codegen and Athlon XP's.
Might even do a fan-mod, changing the fan for a low noise.
I only know this because we did about 30 of these a week, using Asrock K7s41.

I picked up a Corsair CX500M for my Athlon XP rig. I haven't done any voltage checks on it to be honest. I do have the 4 pin power by the socket , as Phil said, so I guess I'll be safe.

I use a MSI K7N2 Delta2 motherboard, not sure if you want or can find one.

I have been told that this brand is not good. Yet it shure does have some nice spec's

+3.3V - 32 A
+5V - 40 A
-12V - 24 A
+5VSB - 2 A
-5V - 0.5 A
-12V - 1 A

Thanks for all the advices!
at the moment the 300W PSU I have (30A at 5V!!) works perfectly (gets a little warm but works) with that system and a X1950 Pro 512MB card.
I managed to get an old Enermax PSU http://www.willhaben.at/iad/kaufen-und-verkau … p-ve-127827120/ which should have more than enough power 😀 but I have to wait until it arrives.

Last night I set up an ECS K7VTA3 v6 motherboard (KT333) with an Athlon XP 2000+ (Palomino). I used a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra and also a 6800 Ultra. I powered this with a Seasonic SS-300ES PSU that has 120W total on 3.3v and 5v (20A). It's the weakest PSU that I have around.

I ran 3DMark2001SE looping 10x each test and had Prime95 in the background as well to make sure the CPU stayed at 100%. The goal was to see if it would have an overload shutdown or any crashing but it stayed up and running through the torture. The PSU exhaust was not particularly hot either and its fan didn't seem to increase speed.

nice - but it might have been a little hotter than usual 😉

It did get warm but it wasn't exactly hot. I couldn't tell if the fan had changed speed either.
