As title. I'm firmly in the CRT supremacy camp, but I find that 1024x768 LCDs are the next best thing. I currently own three. The only decent one is the Viewsonic VG150. It has warm, vibrant, natural colors. Black level is okay, but not great.

I bought a Dell E151FPb a while ago, and it sucks. The picture is very dark and very blue. I fiddled around with the color settings, but never got it to look good.

Today, I picked up a Samsung 151S. Not as bad as the Dell, but not as good as the Viewsonic. Colors are good, but the picture is both dark and washed out, as if the monitor is applying a wacky color curve. It also has a very splotchy backlight.

Anybody have a favorite to recommend? I know that 1280x1024 LCDs are much easier to find, but the 5:4 aspect ratio drives me nuts. The best LCD scaling is no scaling at all.

I have a Philips 18.5" 1366 x 768 LCD. It has DVI and VGA and a 4:3 button at the front. It's the closest I've come to sourcing a 4:3 LCD with a modern panel. It even does 75 Hz at 1024 x 768 😀

I was under the impression the old NEC made in Japan 1024x768 LCDs were the best. Amirite?

I looked at a few 1366x768 LCDs, but was concerned about build quality as they appeared to be budget models. If this is your Philips, though, it looks pretty nice. Have you had any trouble setting a desktop resolution of 1366x768 on Windows 98 and / or old video cards? (Not super important, but the extra desktop real estate would be a nice perk.)

That looks like mine 😀

I actually did a video review on it:1024 x 768 Monitor Option Retro PC Gaming

I'm pretty sure that setting the native resolution in Windows 98 SE wasn't an issue. At least with a newer GeForce card. I don't think I tried it with a Voodoo, I would just use 1024 x 768.

It takes ANY input signal and you can turn it into 4:3. So that includes the BIOS screen, DOS command prompt, 320 x 200 DOS games, 320 x 240 and any other resolution 😀

One negative is the backlight, not sure what the name is, light bleed I guess? But you get used to it. I used this screen to play Unreal on a V3 machine, and let me tell you it is gorgeous!

My K6-2 machine is currently operating at 1920x1080@60Hz using a Voodoo3. The default timings are borked, but it is a simple registry fix. As long as you can find the right timings, it is easy to add modes to the Voodoo3 driver.

Always had 17" Dell 1707FPT as backup monitors (the ones with the silver stands). Really nice for square display. They are 1280x1024 btw and can clock up to 75Hz refresh rate. Still have two in use.

The only 1024x768 TFTs I have are on my Thinkpad X61, plus a few other ancient Thinkpads, and to be honest it's a little lower resolution than I'd prefer.

Otherwise, my Viewsonic VP730 isn't too bad - it's only a TN display, but has two HD15 inputs and one DVI, plus a really good scaler that copes with practically any resolution, negative sync, and possibly sync on green, but it's been so long since I needed that I ran a Sparc system I can't be sure about the sync on green. Many more modern TFTs throw a fit if supplied with a non standard resolution.

I have an LG Flatron L1520B (15" 1024x768) which I think is quite decent. 😀

Still have my old LG Flatron L1510S connected to my main computer as secondary screen. It's aging which his visable when it start with some slight pink coloring but after a minute of running it's all gone. Still an amazing LCD for it's age 🤣 I found that I bought it March 2002 so running great for 13 years now!

I have a Viewsonic VG700 17" LCD, its native resolution is 1280*1024 but it has perfect sharp image at 1024*768 strangly enough. No other LCD I own scales the image as good as the Viewsonic VG700, 800*600 isnt perfect but all lower resolutions looks great. It supports 75Hz and has great colours.

I also think the best option is a CRT, I would not trade my Samsung Syncmaster 959NF 19" CRT for any LCD.

I don't think AOC actually makes the panels, but they do make some nice monitors with IPS panels, which are competitively priced. I have their i2353 FHD IPS monitor. It is very sleek, compact, a bit flimsy, but has two HDMI inputs, and audio input, and performs well (has been in service for a little over 3 years).

I have an AOC monitor, they do 4:3 at 640 x 480 and higher, but not for DOS resolutions such as 320 x 200.

I had a NEC 15" LCD back in 2003, 1550VM with integrated speakers. It had a very good picture, yet the viewing angle was clearly inferior to newer models. The backlight was great, though... I still miss it.

Using a Dell 1504FP right at this moment. Its pretty good.there is a little noticeable ghosting. Pretty good for a TN panel with a 4:3 1280X768 resolution.

Anything made by Eizo, Iiyama or Proview. They can usually be found on ebay in lots. I don't thing Eizo and Iiyama made 15" 1024x768 LCDs, but they do make IPS led backlit 17" and 19" 4:3 pannels. They look WAY better than any 15" 1024x768 LCD I've ever seen. Black is black (because IPS and LED backlit), colors are beautiful and vibrant and pixels are nice and crisp. Pixel sharpness is also adjustable from the menu on IIyama and Eizo monitors. The're the closest thing to a CRT without actually using a CRT. The only downside - a little pricey - anywhere from 50-150$ used depending on model and condition (second hand) and as high as 400$ for a new one (yes they still make 4:3 monitors).
