I guess the intended purposes were mostly office work (spreadsheads, word processing), multimedia and internet browsing.

As far as I know small caches are most noticeable in 3D applications.
Maybe it has to do with the amount of FPU calculations involved.

I just wanted to mention that I have a laptop running a 1.8ghz Northwood P4 and a 64mb Radeon 8500. It plays Quake iii on max settings at 1024x768 really really well. Actually it even makes a good web browser running XP. So The Radeon would def be a good pairing.
