I have an 8mb QDI V2200 Rendition card. Vsync can be disabled via the control panel In W9x, but how is this accomplished in DOS mode? Specifically I want to turn it off with the Rendition accelerated version of CART Racing 2. No luck yet on the internets, nor in the Rendition manual - anyone know?

EDIT: no luck yet either with google or messing around with files. This one is probably headed for the Unsolved bin..

EDIT 2: Please, no one respond - shooting for 100+ without a response. Disabling vsync in DOS on a verite card? who can respond? Shooting for 100. Just look and move on... lets keep 0/100+ going.

I can't really help with Cart Racing. You can try the "Alt-T" key combo but it will change the gamespeed, so actually useless.
I guess a monitor with 120 Hz or higher would fix most performance problems caused by V-Sync. (use the tools "renutil" / "ssutil" to set refreshrates in DOS).

Disabling V-Sync within windows gave me bad artifacts in direct3d games, so it is useless for me. I have the latest hercules driver installed.
Does it work for you within windows without the artifact, which drivers are you using on your vérité?

I see a great performance increase in VQuake2 by disabling V-Sync on my 60 Hz screen.

Indy Car Racing 2 (readme from rendition patch)
***** Rendition Specific Hot Keys *****

Alt-R: Frame rate display toggle.

Alt-M: Three-state toggle for mirror: none, medium detail,
high detail. Defaults to medium. Anti-aliasing takes
place in hi-res mode only.

Alt-W: Three-state toggle for weather: day, night, and rain.
This is a 'for fun / showing off' feature and is not a
realistic gameplay feature; e.g., traction does not change
in 'rain' mode.

Alt-K: Sky optimization toggle: This defaults to off. Can speed
up frame rate at the expense of occasional graphical
glitches, especially on the horizon, when viewed at an
angle (like at Michigan when on a banked turn). May
not be a significant speedup unless you are in Turbo
mode and / or running on a track with no textured sky
(clouds). Only really useful for showing off "maximum
speed mode".

[Technically, can causes glitches on any non-textured
polygon that spans entire screen horizontally, like
when going under some bridges or facing sideways]

Alt-A: Anti-aliasing toggle. Anti-aliasing smoothes the jagged
edges of the graphics on screen.

Alt-T: Timer toggle ('Turbo mode'): When the timer is 'off', the
physics runs at the frame rate: it will be slower than
reality at less than 30 frames/sec, and faster than reality
at greater than 30 frames/sec. Advantage of 'off' is when
the timer is on, the frame rate cannot exceed 30 fps. Can
cause sound problems, especially in big crashes with lots
of smoke and dirt where the frame rate becomes low. Should
NOT be used in dual / multiplayer mode. This is a 'for
fun / showing off' feature only and comes with no warranties.

Alt-X: "Maximum Speed Mode": Frame rate display on, mirrors off,
sky optimization on, anti-aliasing off, timer off. When
toggled off, reverses all these settings, regardless of
their previous values (i.e., restores default).

Print Screen Dumps a 24-bit PCX screen shot to the race directory,
named ICR01.PCX, ICR02.PCX...; note that it always starts at
ICR01 and overwrites any existing PCX from a previous
session.

Default settings:
Anti-Aliasing on
Medium-resolution Mirrors
Timer on (realistic physics)
Sky optimization off
Day weather mode
Frame rate display off

NOTE: These settings are not saved to disk between sessions.

Sometimes you have to hit a key more than once for it to take. If
one or more ALT keys are not responding, press 'Escape', then select
"Resume"; this should restore functionality (this can happen if you use
the CTRL key instead of ALT by mistake).

You're not getting many responses because few people have a clue about Verite hardware. I have not tried Cart Racing 2.

Disabling vsync is one option. Triple buffering would be another. I don't know if either can be tweaked with the game though. 8MB RAM should be nice for triple buffering.

It's possible there are environment variables for Speedy3D that might be useful but I've never seen documentation. On Google Groups someone found one to toggle DMA for IndyCar Racing 2. That's all I can find though....

AFAIR all games with speedy3d, RRedline use triple buffering & V-Sync by default. Cart Racing does have a 30 fps lock, that's maybe the problem.

Yes ICR2/CART Racing does have a 30-fps lock. Though it pegs the limit on my Rendition 8mb/P933 rig I was curious to see if the limit was related in any way to v-sync. V-sync can be disabled in the Windows Verite control panel, but only for Windows sessions. I hoped there might be boot variables that could launch a DOS session (required for the Verite enhanced mode) with it disabled. I had no luck finding anything but given how short-lived the card was and the paucity of games powered exclusively by it, I'm not surprised.

The in-game key commands are there to help get frames up to 30 on slower machines - not to surpass the lock.

However, I read that the game's physics engine is directly tied to the frame cycle so even if v-sync were disabled it would mess up simulation timing - laps, sound effects, racing AI etc. would be disrupted. Not much would be gained except perhaps smoother control in practice lap mode, but then again lap times would not reflect reality.
